Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes Split

Actress Kate Winslet and her husband, film and stage director Sam Mendes ('American Beauty,' 'Jarhead'), have announced that after nearly seven years of marriage, they are separating, the BBC is reporting.

The duo married in 2003 in a private, intimate wedding that took place in the Caribbean, and have a six-year-old son, Joe, together. Winslet also has a nine-year-old daughter, Mia, from her first marriage to Jim Threapleton.

"Kate and Sam are saddened to announce that they separated earlier this year," the couple's lawyers, Schillings law firm, said in a statement. "The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement. Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children. They ask that the media respect the privacy of the family."

Mendes recently directed Winslet in 2008's 'Revolutionary Road,' in which she reunited on screen with her 'Titanic' love interest, Leonardo DiCaprio. The pair married in the West Indies in May 2003.

One of the most acclaimed film actresses working today, Winslet has been nominated for six Academy Awards and won the Best Actress Oscar last year for 'The Reader.' She will next be seen in the HBO miniseries 'Mildred Pierce.'

Mendes won an Oscar for directing 1999's 'American Beauty.'

I have been waiting out this Winslet-Mendes marriage for about six years now. Now is the time to swoop in and scoop her up like it is nobodies business. I will be "there" for her, then eventually drop the two words "for her" and just be "there."

Jesus Christmas.... will they just stop already with the getting married s**t in Hollywood!! I think it is safe to say, that the jury has been in on this subject since Julius Caesar wore short pants.......celebrity relationships DON'T F**KING WORK! I'm pretty sure that everyone in Hollywood has f**ked everyone else at least once, so just stop!

Not all celebrity marriages split: Paul and Joanne Newman, Patrick and Lisa Swayze, thousands more have lasted just fine, and with remarkably good results. It is just that the ones that DON'T get all the publicity. And considering that the general population in the US has a divorce rate of 50% or more, it doesn't seem so out of the ballpark for the rate in Hollywood! Yes, there is infidelity, drugs, divorce, whatever in Hollywood -- there's a high percentage of people with too much money, too much publicity, and too much ego there -- but, quite frankly, considering how the rest of the country is, I don't see much difference except that we hear more about the famous ones! Bet you aren't any better, Denirofan, than all the ones you are condeming. Unless you are without sin, don't cast stones!
