the split -- and we weren't the
only ones. The entertainment world was rocked to its core by the sudden breakup.
Winslet and Mendes' separation is the latest addition to the recent (and growing) list of unexpected celebrity breakups. Some of Hollywood's most beloved couples have called it quits over the past few years. Here, we review the couples that absolutely broke our hearts when they split, and the couples we simply can't imagine ever breaking up.
We're Still Reeling...
Susan Sarandon & Tim Robbins
As far as sudden breakups are concerned, this one wins the top prize. When news first broke that Sarandon and Robbins were splitting after 23 years together, the first reaction was denial. How could these two split up? They're proof relationships can last in Hollywood. That long-term love in Tinseltown can be a reality. Everyone, including us, rooted for them. When the couple, who met on the set of the 1988 film 'Bull Durham' and have two sons together, split, it was like a punch in the gut. If they can't make it, who can? We'd be lying if we said we weren't holding out hope for reconciliation.
Bradley Whitford and Jane Kaczmarek
Everyone from industry folk to TV fans loved Whitford ('The West Wing) and Kaczmarek ('Malcolm in the Middle') together. They were the super-talented couple that stayed out of the tabloids and instead focused on their careers and raising a family. Their marriage and way of life was something other actors and actresses aspired to. And then, BAM. It was over. And Hollywood was left wondering what went wrong. It still stings.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
If you've seen 'The Notebook,' you get it. After watching Gosling and McAdams in the biggest tearjerker in history, everyone fell in love with them. And when it got out that these two stars were actually dating, all romantic hell broke loose. The real-life couple turned into a living and breathing reminder of the movie. And when happily ever after didn't happen for the pair, it was hard to swallow. In fact, it's hard to imagine Rachel McAdams with anyone else but Ryan Gosling. Alas, it was not meant to be.
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
Yes, we know it was a long time ago, but the collapse of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's marriage was mind-blowing at the time. No one saw it coming. The end of Hollywood's golden couple was just so unexpected. The tabloids still can't get enough of the couple and routinely run (ridiculous?) articles detailing their alleged rendezvous and phone calls. For those living under a rock, Pitt and Aniston married in July 2000 after dating for two years. Publicly, everything between the pair seemed fine when, in January 2005, they announced they were separating. During the divorce, the media began to scrutinize his relationship with Angelina Jolie, with whom he'd recently filmed 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith.' Though Pitt and Aniston both denied that adultery was a factor in their separation, Pitt has since
admitted to falling in love with Jolie while filming.
We're Rooting For ...
Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick
They're the quintessential New York odd couple. She is a high-profile fashionista, media/fragrance mogul and blockbuster actress ('Sex and the City'). He's your typical low-profile theater guy -- though, one who gets wicked cool points for personifying Ferris Bueller in John Hughes' classic 1986 film. But when you see the two of them together, she in her couture, he in whatever she laid out on the bed, you can't help rooting for them. The pair have three children -- James Wilke, 9, and nine-month-old twins, Marion and Tabitha -- and have been married for nearly 13 years. We're definitely pulling for 13 (or 30) more! If anyone can do it, they can.
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith
Married for over 12 years, this is another Hollywood power couple. And their bond seems strong: they have fun together and support each other whether producing a movie or goofing off on the red carpet. They're raising a family outside the public eye and doing so with little bother from the tabloids. Best of all? These two never stop singing each other's praises. So cute!
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson
When it comes to Hollywood royalty, this duo might be the reigning king and queen. They call Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw best friends and rub shoulders with the crème de la crème in the entertainment world (think Julia Roberts and George Clooney). If this mighty pair called it quits, the whole kingdom might come crumbling down...

I wish the media would STOP running periodic articles on Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. Brad Pitt now has three biological children and three legally adopted children. He has responsibilities and a beautiful wife, I don't think he'd be stupid enough to chuck it all now.

But in a relationship are two people and as we know, Angelina cannot keep her fingers from her male co stars. Brad is in his mid 40's and she is at least 12 years younger then him.Only time will tell.
Brad doesn't have wife no matter how much you loons want it. Oh and he hasn't legally adopted those kids either. Charlie Rose asked him about it and he didn't say he had. As far as why would he chuck it all now, ask John Edwards why he chucked it all. You think looks and children keep men form cheating? Grow up.

My vote was for Jon and Kate Gosselin. I know that all their drama tends to annoy the general public, but when their marrage broke up it did effect the lives of eight little kids that were(and still are) caught in the middle.

Going back quite bit here, but I was saddened by the Ken (Branagh) and Emma (Thompson) break up. I was so looking forward to them bringing more of Shakespeare's plays to the big screen.

Any of you people who honestly get emotionally affected when these celebrity couples split really need to find something to enhance your apparently pitiful lives as such feelings are truly pathetic given that they surround folks you have NOTHING to do with (those who say they like a celebrity so much that they "feel" like they know them simply reside in Fantasy Land, plain idiots). Really, as if I'm supposed to shed tears and be depressed if Rita Wilson or Will Smith files divorce papers someday. lol Totally irrelevant to everything, world would keep on turning just fine!

It is both sad and unfortunate when a popular couple splits,but unless we constantly work at it;well you know the rest.I believe that most of these separated couples still loves one another,but who is humble enough to make the first move.I speak from forty yrs. of marriage and whenever I took it for granted trouble reared it's hideous head.-Peace to all the loved ones!
