Why Former Jay Leno Fans Turned Their Back on 'The Tonight Show'
Jay Leno has had a few weeks to settle back into his old 'Tonight Show' digs and the ratings show that he's already beaten David Letterman in overall viewership and the prized 18-34 demo. But we wondered whether any old fans decided not to go along for the ride. Were there any former Leno fans who were so turned off by January's late night drama that they suddenly found Jay hard to take? We asked readers to join our Pop Chorus. Here are two of their stories.
A Late-Night Letdown by Richard Todd Aguayo
Jay Leno made a career for himself as a safe, make-no-waves, blue-collar comedian and as such, he tickled the funny bone of most of America for over sixteen years as 'The Tonight Show' host. But there's one thing Americans, especially in Jay's demographic, demand: courage and honor.
It was bad enough that NBC seemed to cave in to their affiliates by pulling the plug on Conan after only eight months, but what made matters worse was that Jay was seen as an accessory for going along with the whole thing.
What would have happened had Jay done the honorable thing, i.e. standing up for a fellow comedian, and refusing to return to 'The Tonight Show' if NBC pulled Conan off the air? NBC would have been forced to show some courage and keep Conan on the air just as it did with Jay when he started, until the ratings improved. However, NBC had no such courage, because Jay had no such honor.
It's not like Jay Leno needed the money -- the man has more cars than most people have socks. With all of that drama, I was still ready to give this re-engagement a chance. >>>
Give Jay His Walking Papers by Dominique Lewis
As a teenager, there was something I did not like about Jay Leno, but I could never put my finger on it. Maybe it was his chin; I don't know. But in my twenties, I had a baby, and as I stayed up most nights trying to rock him to sleep, I was forced to watch 'The Tonight Show' and, surprisingly, I enjoyed it. Soon, I was trying to watch 'Tonight' as much as possible. I liked Jay Leno's monologues and I absolutely loved 'Jaywalking.' When I learned that NBC executives were planning to give Conan O'Brien the show, I thought it was a bad idea because both of their shows were doing extremely well. Why make such a drastic change? Why fix what isn't broken?
I accepted the new change. I figured I would be able to stay up and watch both Jay and Conan. But when they aired in their new time slots, I thought they were terrible compared to the shows I was used to. Once Letterman was the new late night leader, I knew NBC executives were going to try to bring Jay Leno back to 11:35. It didn't make a difference to me, because I wanted the shows to be exactly like they were. I should have known Conan would not go for such a cruel demotion. >>>
I fired up the TV and prepared to be wowed. I felt comforted because I knew there were others just like me who were watching to see how this whole thing would turn out. The show began and I sat there waiting, although I'm not sure what I was waiting for. Something spectacular? Groundbreaking? I knew there would be some skit to introduce the show. Sure enough, a "no place like home" ode to 'The Wizard of Oz' welcomed Jay and his crew back to late-night, and that's when my heart began to sour.
Home? That's what Jay called it. Home. He even said it in his monologue, "It's great to be back home." As if 'The Tonight Show' was "his." Perhaps if he had said, "It's great to be back" or something to that effect. But he acted as though the last eight months were just a detour to an inevitable return. No mention of Conan. No nod for the courage and honor Conan displayed in maintaining the integrity of the 'Tonight' franchise when he refused to take a later time slot. Jay plowed through his first show back as if returning from a vacation in which a guest host filled in. In fact, if that were the case, Jay probably would have thanked that guest host, or at least mentioned them. But no, it was business as usual: all for Jay and Jay for Jay.
Conan lost 'The Tonight Show,' but he hasn't lost late-night. He's probably mustering his forces, preparing for a return on a rival network in the fall. This is when the late night war will really be fought. Yet, I fear as this war continues, I may be in for another late-night letdown. Some wars are just and some are necessary, but none are good for making people laugh.
I visited my mother-in-law, and she was sitting on her couch watching Oprah.
Oprah's guest was Jay Leno, so I sat down and watched the interview.
This particular interview made me disgusted with him. He was such a liar; he made it seem like he was the puppet and the NBC executives were pulling the strings. He said okay to every idea that involved keeping him on television. He told the truth about wondering why he was being asked to step down after having the number one show for twenty years. However, he lied about agreeing with the executives' plan only because he was still under a contract. He could not admit that he did not want anyone else to host 'The Tonight Show.' He has made millions of dollars, and he could have stepped down from television altogether. Other people deserve the chance to shine.
I once thought Jay Leno was very funny and down-to-earth. Now it is obvious -- Jay Leno is a selfish man who only has two obsessions: his cars and 'The Tonight Show.' It's a show he wants to hog until the day he dies. Therefore, I will not be watching the new and "improved" version.

So now we have two more anti-Leno editorials. Why? Get it through your heads, you're only as good as your ratings. NBC was losing BIG money with Conan on the Tonight Show. He was best suited in the late-night spot. They wouldn't let Jay out of his contract, so he could persue other networks. I am so sick of hearing about Leno's "filthy rich" bank account and his car collection. Don't you people know anything about business? It was Conan who made the power-play, to get the Tonight show, and force Jay out, in the first place. When he bombed in that time slot, NBC tried everything it could think of to bring the ratings up. Yes, it's too bad what happened, but I do believe that Leno is not a descendant of Satan.

Leno was decent. I'd tune in time to time but Conan Was Always the one to watch. I have no respect for Leno nor his supporters. People desperately want you to take Leno's name out of the equation. Not going to happen. He's the bad guy and NBC is with him. I'm never watching anything with Leno in it again if I can help it.

Are you kidding me? Do you all know what this jihad against Jay Leno is all about...it's all about Conan on fox next yr.

Why is AOL so biased against Jay? It is absurd. He did nothing to Conan. To the contrary Conan forced him out, and then flopped. I've watched almost all of Jay's shows since he returned, and find him back in good form. I believe AOL is just trying to stir up something that is not there. Your polls are loaded. I've been a paying member since the 90s. I am wondering why I continue!

I love Jay. Conan is so silly and Letterman is just a whoremonger. I will watch Jay as long as he is on the air. Go Jay. You are a classic.

What are these two "writers" 10 years old? Conan will bomb again if Fox gives him a late night slot opposite Leno. The original sin here is the cosimically stupid decision by NBC seven years ago to bump Leno. Leno had every right to reclaim his throne. Grow up children.

The two former Leno fans were somewhat clueless. The first reviewer is waiting for Conan to appear on a rival network this fall. Conan's contract prohibits him from appearing on any network for the next several years.

You guys are WAY over analyzing this. Leno's stated intent to "retire" was made about 5 years into a 10 year contract. He was #1, and foresaw a day when he might not be. NBC made a deal with Conan. Leno maintained his #1 status, and would like to have stayed. NBC honored their new contract with Conan. Conan's ratings fell flat. It was viewer preference in that time slot. NBC NEEDED the revenue that Leno could, and does bring to that time slot. Just business. Besides, Conan got a pretty fat buy-out check, and will probably be back on the air this fall.

Who cares? Get over it, please. The bottom line is money with NBC. The fact is they pushed Leno out prematurely for Conan who flopped in that time period. They lost tons of money on it, realized they screwed up big time and got Jay back. End of story. They don't care about Conan anymore than they cared about Leno when they booted him out at #1. Btw, where were all these "Conan fans" when he needed them? Letterman is sore because he liked being top dog and isn't anymore. Kimmel is just capitalizing on it and having fun with the debacle. Hey folks....that's showbiz! I love how media is trying so hard to keep it alive. It's cooked.

Love Leno!! "Went to bed" with him every night for years, then NBC busted up our sleeping arrangement for a few months. Now, thank goodness, we're back and I'm happy.

Craig Ferguson is certainly the best of the late night bunch. Great humor without having to use sexual overtones to get a laugh. Jay & Dave are getting old with the same predictable bits over and over. Go Ferguson !!!

This whole matter is simply "who do you like". If you like Conan, it is all Leno's fault. If you like Leno, it is not his fault. In my opinion it is all NBC's fault. And it would serve Letterman well to be more sportsman like and shut up about this whole issue. But then, that is not David Liberalman's style, is it!

They all suck!!! Television today is garbage;wouldn't watch ANYTHING on the big three. I hope they all fall off the air and DIE!!!

If you think Jay did not have anything to do with this whole debacle, you have your head in the clouds. What he did was disgusting. Conan wasn't great, I agree, but he deserved a chance to prove himself and NBC did not give it to him because Jay pulled the strings and when his 10 o'clock spot failed, as it should have, he wanted back in and all he had to do was ask and Conan was history. I will stick with Letterman - he is much funnier and has great guests.

Jake, Before you spell check someone and critique "their" spelling of infomercial, try going back to school yourself and learn not only how to spell but also simple grammar and punctuation. Once back in school you will learn the difference between "their" and "they're"... you moron.

What garbage these 2 "fans" spew! First of all Richard-- You want courage & honor? Well look back when Jay told he was out of his job because Prince Conan wanted it. Did he go crying to the press or public?? NO! And Dominique--I guess you have an inside track and know personally all the details of this fiasco enough to call Jay a liar?? I am sure that if any of you go to work tomorrow and your boss says "Listen, Joe Smith wants your job so you're out!"you would say "Oh of course" And if your boss came back to you and said "Listen, Joe Smith is not doing a good job, we want you back" --you all would say "Oh no please, I can't take my job back, that would be mean!YEAH RIGHT!!! You're all either phonies or just morons. Once and for all--THIS MESS FALLS IN NBC'S LAP--NOT LENO!!!!!! If you weren't a fan before--Jay Leno doesn't need you now. If you were a fan and not any more--then you are just an idiot that buys into media garbage like this "articles" AOL keeps running.
