Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland opens up about Christmas caroling in prison, rumors of a feud with Guns N' Roses and receiving a massage while his wife was in labor in a revealing interview in Details magazine.
Weiland didn't think having a massage during his ex-wife Mary Forsberg's labor was out of line. "What do you mean? I was incredibly stressed-out," Weiland rationalized. "She was having contractions and that was tripping me out, so I called up our friend and she gave me a massage. I laid out right next to where Mary was." The incident was revealed in Forsberg's memoir of their tumultuous relationship together. 'Fall to Pieces: A Memoir of Drugs, Rock 'n' Roll, and Mental Illness' was published last year.
"No one I've ever talked to thought [the massage] was weird," revealed Weiland. "It's incredibly stressful when the person you love is having a child. And I was sober at that time, so I needed something to take the edge off."
Weiland is doing interviews in advance of the first Stone Temple Pilots album in nine years. Although fans had mixed reactions to their last studio album, 'Shangri-La Dee Da,' Weiland promises their new music is a straight-up rock record more in touch with hits 'Core' and 'No. 4.'
Weiland's "on-again, off-again" relationship with drugs is now off-again. But even Pilots' band-mate Dean DeLeo has doubts about his lead singer's sobriety, and recently questioned it in interviews. "[Dean's] probably referring to my drinking. I still drink," Weiland confessed. "If he thought he could drink and not do drugs, he might do that too. I can have a scotch and not want to shoot up." [Editor's note: Please don't try this at home.] Enjoy Some Ol' School STP:
Weiland feels the difference now is the grounding he receives from his children. "Heroin made me feel all right in my own skin," he stated. "Before I did it, I was uncomfortable going into crowds, which is interesting given my profession. But when I did dope, the fear went away. That's why I hung on to it so long. But my kids fill up that hole now."
Another factor leading to Weiland's sense of balance was a stint in prison for possession. "A counselor gave us some Christmas carols, and I'd learn all the parts and assign the harmonies," Weiland fondly reminisced. "There were some former Crips and a white supremacist in there, which added some levity to the idea of missing the holidays with your family. I ran into a couple of those guys a while back and had a good laugh. As horrible as jail was, there were some first-rate guys in there."
Weiland formed the supergroup Velvet Revolver with Axl Rose's former band-mates from Guns N' Roses during a break from Pilots and almost met the rival singer. "We came close to getting together one time. I had wondered if he was the center of all their problems or if it was a mixed bag -- and it was definitely the latter."
Although the new band eventually dissolved, it started off promising. "When Velvet Revolver first got together it was great," Weiland glowed. "We had all been through the same experiences, and it felt like a gang. But everyone was a rock star. There were petty jealousies. Then the wives got involved with the business of the band, and that was the beginning of the downfall."
The new studio album 'Stone Temple Pilots' is set to be released in 2010. Read more about Scott Weiland and Stone Temple Pilots in Details.
So it was stressful for him when his wife was in labor - what about HER???? She was in pain and he was having another woman massaging him. What a jerk!
Weiland was NOT the one responsible for putting Velvet Revolver together! He barely showed up on many occasions and when he did he was usually screwed up.
