Dissecting the Case Against Kate Gosselin on 'DWTS'

Pop-Ed: This week's cover of PEOPLE magazine features a sexy Kate Gosselin (revealing a lot of leg) with the headline "Why Can't A Mom Have Fun?" It seems people love criticizing the newly-divorced mom of eight. The tabloids have been having a field day, attacking her parenting skills because 'Dancing with the Stars' is filmed in Los Angeles -- nearly three thousand miles across the country from her children, who are based in Pennsylvania.

In fact, the very first question she got asked was why she decided to do the show, as it involves so much time away from home. Bet she wouldn't have been asked that question if she were a man.

She did explain that, like P. Diddy, she's all about the "Benjamins" and providing for her family. And let's be frank -- it seems like she can't exactly rely on Jon Gosselin for child support. She says very clearly that her many media appearances and deals are meant to ensure her family's financial stability.

The second question, asking how it felt to be away from home for weeks at a time, seems like another dig at her commitment to her kids. In all the interviews Jon has done over the last few months, has anyone bothered to ask him how he felt being away from his kids when he was off gallivanting in the South of France or bar-hopping in Manhattan? (Never mind that Jon had the kids for 9 of the 12 days that Kate was away.)

Another question asked why the kids haven't accompanied her to Los Angeles -- even though she'd explained beforehand that she only spends half of the week there and the other half back home with her kids.

I'm pretty sure she'll also be disparaged if she decides to have her kids fly in to watch her perform. I can hear the Greek chorus now: How much school are they missing? She's exploiting them! Look how badly she wants to win! She's hoping her kids will get her votes!

I'm hoping she flies her kids in from Pennsylvania and has them sitting front and center cheering her on. Let's face it, those kids have had cameras filming them almost their entire lives, and they surely don't remember a time when they weren't being recorded. With all the upheaval they have experienced in the last few months -- their parents acrimonious divorce splashed across dozens of magazines, their father's very public parade of girlfriends -- maybe it will be a good thing for them to return to what they know best: television cameras. It'll probably be a comforting and familiar environment for them.

And why shouldn't Kate have her posse of supporters? Every other celebrity schleps their family along for support. Who could forget Kelly Osbourne's tearful hug with her parents, Sharon and Ozzy, last season. She surely picked up a few extra votes from that. Plenty of contestants bring their young kids along as a cheering squad.

Seeing that adorable octet will probably garner Kate some extra votes. All's fair in love and dancin.'

Jen I totally agree with you. I was a single mother and it would have been great to have access to a job that paid me to dance. I had to leave my kids to work every day, just a fact of life for many women, Kate has to work to support her children, so I say good for her if some one wants to pay her to dance and probably pay her handsomely to boot.

I totallu agree with Jen. Anyone with 8 kids and no husband needs a lot of time and money to take care of them. why not also have fun by Dancing with the Stars ?

I believe she gets a reminder of Jon whenever she is around any of her kids. They all look like him and not a bit like her. He deserved what he got for running around on her, but I think she deserves some also. She always treated him like crap right on camera, never treated him like a husband but a servant. I think he is wrong to stray like he did but I believe she was partially to blame for him doing it. I watched nearly every episode and you hardly ever, if ever, saw them holding hands or kissing. The only time they were together was on the loveseat in front of the camera. Having kids should bring a couple together although they have their hands full. They did have hired help though.

People keep saying that Kate Gosselin is "whoring" herself to the media. She says that she is doing this for the money for her kids. I would have to say GOOD FOR HER!!! No matter how one views it, it is a job. Just like people who work at fast-food restaurants, or even teachers, are all "whores". I am a teacher, so no different. I use this term to say that we give ourselves for a job to get money in return. This is the nature of business, especially in America. We all do what we are used to and know to get ahead in this country. She is no different.

Just when I thought the Gosselins were gone from the picture! She is one disgusting, hypocritical jerk. I have one kid and I wouldn't want to be away from her. Kate "Grosselin" is money hungry and would not be critized if she didn't play two sides of the fence. You can't "play" devoted mom and then do whatever you want when you want it.

You said it so well.....That is my problem with Kate....She does try to play both sides of the fence.....If she didn't spout off about what a great mother she is, it wouldn't bother me as much......It just seems to me that she could definitely make a decent living as an RN and give those children a much healthier lifestyle....Children are adaptable and they would have soon adapted to the difference and not have to be under the public's scrutiny constantly......

Both sides of the fence and the "Oh poor me" victim. I don't care if she does the show, but quit saying "it's all about the kids". I will never watch a show she is on again because I am so tired of the poor Kate...it takes two!

Oh, and by the way...there are many many female stars that work long hard hours away from their kids, but do we have to read article and article about how they are workinig to still be devoted to their kids. Maybe it is because they don't have something to prove. Just maybe....

Hey Peppy!! Do you work? If you do, then you are away from your kid. If you don't, then I assume you are either on welfare or your husband supports you and your kid. Back off, she is supporting her kid.

Look, this lady used to be a nurse. If she could step down off her high and glorious horse for one second, she could get a normal job. Lots of single parents work and have their kids in some sort of day care. Heck, her kids are at school all day and nurses can pretty much make their own schedules these days. She just doesnt want to give up her expensive lifestyle even though she didnt earn it by hard work. For all of you siding w/ her. I bet after you met her or speak to anyone who used to live w/in a 60 mile radius of her, you would understand why people just want her gone.

Why should she, KD? She said herself in the article that she'd go back to being a nurse if she could afford to raise her kids on the salary. And given the schedule she'd had to work (if it was what she worked before), she'd actually see her kids less. If you have the chance to make more, why shouldn't she?

You could have left out the name of the woman who wrote this story and you would still be able to tell that a woman wrote this. Granted, there are plenty of women who disagree with this hags choices but the majority of her supporters are in fact women. I have to assume that the remaining percentage of her supporters are gay men. Why else you you even begin to care about this useless trash?

Bravo, billybrown00, I totally agree with you and I am a woman. I am sick of hearing single moms whining, and I was a single Mom 28 years ago, I'm a grandmother now. I never whined about it. I raised my daughter without help from welfare, food stamps, section 8, or any help from family. My ex and I were mature adults that co-parented our daughter without alot of drama, WE owed it to HER. I was a nurse, by the way and I also served my country in the United States Army Reserves.
