'Wonder Years' Star Danica McKellar, Husband Adding to Their Family

Actress-turned-math wiz Danica McKellar and her husband, Mike Verta, are "bursting" to tell people that they are expecting their first child later this fall.

The former 'Wonder Years' star tells PEOPLE she's nearing the end of her first trimester and is "so excited" about being a mom. She initially put off finding out about the pregnancy because she was busy finishing writing her upcoming book 'Hot X: Algebra Exposed,' which comes out in August.

"I wanted to put off the [pregnancy] test because I didn't want any distractions. That only lasted a day -- I couldn't stop thinking about it and I caved! You can't try to put that off."

For now, McKellar is just amazed at the news itself. "When you do take the home pregnancy test, it doesn't quite seem real," she beams. "But when you see the baby and the heartbeat on the ultrasound, it's so incredible."

"Me and Mike looked at each other and we could not stop the tears," she says. "We are so happy."

McKellar and Verta tied the knot in March of last year.

I care, and I'll tell you why. Because this young woman is an absolute class act. Despite television fame and real beauty, she got a college degree in mathematics, has written at least two books on math (one written with the expressed purpose of empowering girls to value their intelligence over looks), and--HELLO!--she got married and THEN got pregnant! In a world where doing things hastily and out of order is glamorized, Danica McKellar is conducting herself like a real lady.

Now I will state that I was married before I had my children but, some ppl out there don't believe in marriage and want children anyway. Are the supposed to never have children because you find the situation "unacceptable"? Who are you to judge someone and tell them how to live their lives? I really can't stand judgmental hypocrites and the world would be a much better place if you kept your narrow minded opinions to yourselves. Why don't you try just being genuinely happy for someone when they're happy.

As Danica's father, I am appalled reading the quote "Me and Mike". I will ask her if she was misquoted. She certainly does not confuse subjective and objective pronouns when speaking.
