The Best Job for a RomCom? A Journalist

Any devoted fan of romantic comedies knows that the most often represented profession among lady leads is the chick journalist. The job of reporter lends itself well to the rom-com genre. It's a flexible job description with a built in nosy editor to drive the action along, and the reporter can always profess to be chasing a story in the name of love. We caught Moviefone's special sneak peak screening of 'The Bounty Hunter' at the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City (where a lot of the movie was filmed) and must say Jennifer Aniston fills the role of girl reporter for the New York Daily News well. Of course, during my many years as a reporter for the daily tabloid, I can't remember chasing down a story in a mini skirt and four inch heels. But if I had Jen's legs, I probably would have.
In honor of journalism's place on the silver screen, let's take a look back at our favorite rom-com lady scribes.
1. Meg Ryan in 'Sleepless in Seattle' -- Meg uses a "story" as her excuse to "research" a lovelorn widow in Seattle, encouraged along the way to hop on planes to fly across the country and "report" by her editor and best friend Rosie O'Donnell.
2. Eva Mendes in 'Hitch' -- Eva's tabloid gossip columnist is hot to reveal the identity of dating doctor Will Smith. Things get complicated when she gets smitten herself.
3. Drew Barrymore in 'Never Been Kissed' -- All Drew wants to do is impress her editors with her hard-hitting investigative reporting skills. But since she's so damn young and cute, they send her undercover at the local high school, where she falls for a comely teacher. Breaking News! Her romance and story are put in jeopardy when he discovers her true identity.
4. Kate Hudson in 'How To Lose a Guy in Ten Days' -- Kate is an up-and-coming lady magazine columnist who has the brilliant idea to write a story about how to foil a relationship. She's the one who ends up in trouble though, when she falls for dashing ad man Matthew McConaughey.
5. Julia Roberts in 'My Best Friend's Wedding' -- Restaurant reviewer Julia Roberts doesn't realize she's in love with her fellow journalist best friend (Dermot Mulroney) until he's about to marry perky Cameron Diaz. Hijinks ensue as Roberts tries to thwart the wedding with the aid of her overly-helpful homosexual editor, Rupert Everett, who graciously poses as her fiancé.
