The Broadway revival of 'The Miracle Worker' starring Abigail Breslin as Helen Keller will close April 4 after a disappointing run of less than two months and a loss of more than $2.5 million. The production also stars Alison Pill as Annie Sullivan, the determined young woman who teaches the deaf and blind Helen how to communicate. When the final curtain falls, the show will have played 21 preview performances and 38 regular performances at Circle in the Square Theatre.

This story is repetitive and says very little about the play itself. What were the review like? Why did this classic not survive? Are we too cynical a society for a play like this? Theatre is popular culture too you know.

it's sad to say, but no one cares about helen keller anymore. why anyone would do yet ANOTHER play is a mystery.

As much as I like this young actress, she does not have the star quality of someone like Dakota Fanning. If anyone could have done this role, Dakota could have. She is closer to a young Jodie Foster than anyone in tinseltown today. I don't believe that Jodie ever played the role, but she certainly could have.
Also, the role of the teacher needed a star as well. Most likely, that is why it failed.

Abigail Breslin doesn't have "star quality?" Abigail is a very talented young woman with numerous film credits, and an Oscar nomination, no less. She chooses interesting roles, and I look forward to seeing what she does in the future. Not to knock Dakota Fanning (whom I also believe to be very talented), but at least she stays away from that Twilight crap.
This production was simply not very good. It was done in "the round" which means, at some point, the actor's backs are to part of the audience. If you're familiar with the play, it doesn't work in the round; you need to see the actor's faces. One scene in particular, it is so important to see EVERYTHING that is going on and not the back of someone's head. Also, Alison Pill as Annie Sullivan and Abigail Breslin are too close in height when you consider Helen is supposed to be 6 years old. Plus, Abigal looked too old. I believe Patty Duke was 10 when she did the show originally and under five feet tall. Ms. Breslin is neither.

Debbie,
Hardly......Abigail has been nominated for an Oscar......so I do think people know who she is...and Jodie Foster hand chose her for Nim's Island...
I am sure the problem is we need more crap like 101 Dalmations: The Musical.......

We all have the right to our opinion, mine is that she is not in the same league as Dakota. "Little Miss Sunshine" was a cute film she was very cute in it, However, watch Dakota in "I AM SAM" with Sean Penn and you will see how great she is.
All of you have a wonderful day, this as always, is just my personal opinion.
