After years of fighting off rumors about his sexuality, Latin singer Ricky Martin has finally just posted the following message on his official Web site, coming out and telling the world he is gay.
"Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment. These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn't even know existed ... I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am," he wrote.
"What will happen from now on? It doesn't matter. I can only focus on what's happening to me in this moment. The word 'happiness' takes on a new meaning for me as of today. It has been a very intense process. Every word that I write in this letter is born out of love, acceptance, detachment and real contentment. Writing this is a solid step towards my inner peace and vital part of my evolution," Marin continues.
Why is Ricky Martin coming out now? He admits he never talked about his sexuality because people advised him not to. "Many people told me: 'Ricky it's not important,' 'it's not worth it,' 'all the years you've worked and everything you've built will collapse,' 'many people in the world are not ready to accept your truth, your reality, your nature.' Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth. Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions," he adds.
Earlier this month, Barbara Walters revealed she regretted trying to force Martin to open up about his sexuality in a 2000 interview, saying that her questioning may have ended his career. "In 2000, I pushed Ricky Martin very hard to admit if he was gay or not, and the way he refused to do it made everyone decide that he was," she told The Toronto Star. "A lot of people say that destroyed his career, and when I think back on it now, I feel it was an inappropriate question."
During the interview, Walters tells him, "You know, you could stop these rumors. You could say, as many artists have, 'Yes I am gay,' or you could say, 'No I'm not,' or you could leave it, as you are, ambiguous. I don't want to put you on the spot, but it's in your power to do it."
(Forward to :39 to watch the interview.)
The 'Livin' La Vida Loca' singer is a single dad to twin sons, who were born via a surrogate in August 2008. This raised tabloid rumors about his sexuality, but he tried to avoid commenting on the topic until now. "This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day. To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where born with. Enough is enough. This has to change. This was not supposed to happen 5 or 10 years ago, it is supposed to happen now," Martin writes.
Me too! I always say, "the only sex life I care about is my own"...'nuff said.
But, good for you Ricky! Living a lie is hard and there is no shame in being the beautiful, gay man that you are. You have done so much for so many with your philanthropic work, we are blessed to have you in our world. Much love...
Well said!! Why does the world care who someone is sleeping with? I don't care if there gay or straight or cheating I don't want to hear about it but it is forced on us by the media who thinks that all we care about. We don't have news reports anymore. We have who is sleeping with who reports.
Your wrong Kavenway and there is news reports the media isn't forcing this on you as you have claim which is a lie. Only way you hear about this stuff in Entertainment news that is it not in real news reporting I doubt that you hear it on evening news. CNN, MSNBC, Fox News during the day parts only otherwise I don't think you don't hear about as much.
Congratulations to Ricky Martin for accepting his truth and for doing it publicly. I believe that everyone is surely entitled to their privacy, even celebrities. However, accepting his truth in the public eye is a powerful thing. It is, in my opinion, a gift to many men and women who still live afraid and ashamed of their truths and it's a revelation of the times in which we live. You can have all the riches and fame in the world, but it's meaning is somewhat diminished if you can't be true to yourself.
Finally, to those on this post like J9 who believe that we should just shut up already because this is the problem with homosexuals, that we can't just shut up, why should we have to. We've been asked to shut up for so long. Are people asked to shut up when they talk about their heterosexual relationships? No. We see it and hear it everyday from every celebrity - who they're dating, marrying, living with, etc. What is so wrong with Ricky Martin, or any homosexual for that matter, opening up about their life. J9, no you don't get it. You say you get it, he has sex with men. At no point in his statements has he even referred to sex. In fact, he didn't even mention a partner.
I believe its time that people start accepting people for whoever and whatever they are. When we begin to do this, someone being gay or straight or white or black or green or purple or whatever they are wouldn't even matter.
To all... live your lives unashamed. We're all children of the universe.
Great post, Miguel. Just remember we'll change this world one person at a time. And society is changing. Just look how far attitudes have changed in just the last 10 years. Who cares if you're straight, gay, bi, and now, neuter! We're all just people who want to love and be loved and really, isn't that something we're all entitled to? And at the end of the day, power, money, status, beauty - none of that matters if you're unloved and alone.

AMEN..lOVED HIS MUSIC, AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE IMPRESSED WITH HIM, HIS MUSIC. HE IS A GORGEOUS PERSON, ENTERTAINING AND A HUMANITARIAN..AND I AM SURE A GREAT DAD TO HIS CHILDREN..CAN'T ASK FOR ANYTHING MORE THAN THAT.
I say bravo as well and believe it or not if you support a gay person it doesn't mean you are gay. We have to start accepting and start living with each other and all our differences. The time is now because if you look at the news we're really going to have to survive together in the future. I'm pro-survival.
To Miguel, I think you said it correctly is nobody's business what a person is as long as he is not a criminal. Being gay in this time should not be as important as being a good person. Ricky is a great person, from Puerto Rico and never forgets it. He is a great singer and an extraordinary father who not only worries about his friend and family but also about poor kids all over the world. I personally met him when he was 12 and in Menudo because my daughter had a fan club and followed them whenever they were in NY or in PR and I know that he had a big heart and and now. To Ricky I'll say is nobody's business but more power to you because you came out on your terms not by being pressured! I loved you when you were a kid and know I am more proud of you.
Miguel.....you said it all! Gracias! ¿ Why is someones´s sexuality EVERYONE´S business! Makes me sick! And I am heterosexual,in case all the nosy people HAVE to know! ayyyyyyyy
here here... it's 2010. with everything else going on in this world, concentrating on the sex lives of celebraties may be a way to get our minds off the mind boggling issues of the day. Bottom line is that this country was founded on protecting the rights of EVERY one = why is that so hard for some to understand? just sayin...
'a danger disease?' Please. Congratulations, Ricky!!!! The world needs more courageous people to speak their truth. Beautiful! Much happiness to you! xo

Beautiful post Miguel but sadly there are ignorant, close minded people in the world who will never get the heart of your message.

*YAWNS* I knew he was gay the moment he began his singing career when he was a youngman. Still I enjoy his music and wish him the very best.

Dear Ricky:
No one thought you were straight. Everyone knew you were gay. This happened 5 or 10 years ago; it did not happen now.
Never outright denying it was a brave enough choice in its own way. So no need for agonizing self-reflection.
PopEater: I hope you had your tongues in your cheeks when you called this a "bombshell."
