After years of fighting off rumors about his sexuality, Latin singer Ricky Martin has finally just posted the following message on his official Web site, coming out and telling the world he is gay.
"Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment. These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn't even know existed ... I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am," he wrote.
"What will happen from now on? It doesn't matter. I can only focus on what's happening to me in this moment. The word 'happiness' takes on a new meaning for me as of today. It has been a very intense process. Every word that I write in this letter is born out of love, acceptance, detachment and real contentment. Writing this is a solid step towards my inner peace and vital part of my evolution," Marin continues.
Why is Ricky Martin coming out now? He admits he never talked about his sexuality because people advised him not to. "Many people told me: 'Ricky it's not important,' 'it's not worth it,' 'all the years you've worked and everything you've built will collapse,' 'many people in the world are not ready to accept your truth, your reality, your nature.' Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth. Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions," he adds.
Earlier this month, Barbara Walters revealed she regretted trying to force Martin to open up about his sexuality in a 2000 interview, saying that her questioning may have ended his career. "In 2000, I pushed Ricky Martin very hard to admit if he was gay or not, and the way he refused to do it made everyone decide that he was," she told The Toronto Star. "A lot of people say that destroyed his career, and when I think back on it now, I feel it was an inappropriate question."
During the interview, Walters tells him, "You know, you could stop these rumors. You could say, as many artists have, 'Yes I am gay,' or you could say, 'No I'm not,' or you could leave it, as you are, ambiguous. I don't want to put you on the spot, but it's in your power to do it."
(Forward to :39 to watch the interview.)
The 'Livin' La Vida Loca' singer is a single dad to twin sons, who were born via a surrogate in August 2008. This raised tabloid rumors about his sexuality, but he tried to avoid commenting on the topic until now. "This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day. To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where born with. Enough is enough. This has to change. This was not supposed to happen 5 or 10 years ago, it is supposed to happen now," Martin writes.
I have loved Ricky for as long as I can remember and have always assumed that he was gay. Doesn't matter to me one bit. He's a wonderful human being, patent and entertainer. I think I may love him even more now that he's admitted his sexuality to the world. Maybe he can now attain the happiness that he has always given to his fans. God bless you Ricky - and GO ON TOUR SOON!!!!!
To above "Miguel" Bravo and very well said! As for Ricky I wish him and his Children nothing but good health and Happiness for the rest of their lives.... God Bless
Don't care he's gay-didn't plan on marrying him. He was on Oprah a few years back-he apparntly gave a large donation to some girls(can't remember what country)-to get the girls off the streets and away from the pimps. A refuge house so they could be safe and get an education. After that show I had a different opinion about him. If he's happy who cares about his sexuality.
I always thought he might be and never knew why he would deny it.He is a very talented man and beautiful person. All that is important is that he is happy and knows that no matter what his fans support him all the way.
Right on Ricky. It is always good to be true to youself and who you are. I know as I have been there and finally came out to who I was to family and friends and have a much happier life being who I am. I think what upsets me most with the gay issue is people telling us it is a choice. I wish it were but it is who I am and have always been. Sorry if people can't accept that but I didn't choose to be gay anymore then a straight person sat down one day and said he or she was going to be straight. I also had a problem with it being a Christain and after many years of hating who I was I asked God to take me as I couldn't go on and the answer I received back (don't care if anyone believes it or not) is that I am his child and He loves me as He made me. Other then that I don't really care what someone else thinks. Ricky, I am proud of you and you came out when the time was right for you as we all do.
Miguel, We are NOT children of the universe! We are the children of God and this is an abomination to the Lord. I agree that we shouldn't judge anyone and be hateful to them for something that is wrong, but we shouldn't celebrate it, either.
Ricky Martin has never been anything less than a gentleman and a class act. Contratulations on having the dignity to finally admit to being who you are!
I am very HAPPY for you Ricky!!! Truely that was your business and not the media's but they always like to play with people's lives. I think there must be some jealousy because they do not have the FAME!!! "MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR BOYS"!!! I truely, from the bottom of my heart wish you all the LOVE & HAPPINESS you deserve in life. Always be proud of who you are because we all should be judged by what is in our hearts not by anything else

How do YOU know what is an "abomination to the Lord?" Does he have you on speed-dial or something? Really, what makes you think you are so special?

Being gay or straight isn't the same as being white, black, green, or purple. It isn't a religion a nationality or an ethnic group. It's a lifestyle.
