'Genuinely Ill' Tom Jones Cancels Several Concerts

Welsh singing legend Tom Jones has been forced to cancel concerts in South Korea and Singapore because doctors have found him to be "genuinely ill," reports Reuters.

Jones, 69, stopped singing after two songs at Singapore's Resorts World Sentosa casino and entertainment complex last Friday. The cause? "Acute laryngitis," declared Jones' Web site. Physicians are "unable to guarantee that Sir Tom would be able to perform the full show tonight at 100 percent vocal strength," said the site, despite efforts to rest his voice and the rescheduling of his concert until Thursday.

The vocal problems are serious enough that concerts on Friday and Saturday at the Olympic Fencing Stadium in Seoul have also been cancelled. "In addition, they have warned that by performing, Sir Tom could risk serious permanent damage to his vocals," said the site.

But there is some hope. Future performances in Oman's Muscat, South Africa's Johannesburg and Cape Town, and the United Arab Emirates' Abu Dhabi are set for April and are expected to go forward as scheduled.

The cancellation of Jones' concert is the second major setback in short order for the Singaporean entertainment complex. Last week, it shut down the world's tallest duelling rollercoaster at its Universal Studios theme park, one of its main attractions. Genting Singapore, a unit of Malaysia's Genting group operates the entertainment complex.

He's going to be 70 years old in a few months.

Lori: My God, little girl, he's young looking at 69. Although, today that is not an old age, he looks younger than most 69 year old women. I'll bet he never had a facelift.

I'm 68 and I look much younger (even though bald and fatter), but I may not have experienced the stress Tom has; albeit, I have been a fraud auditor and DEA which resulted in plenty of travel and stress. Perhaps it's because I don't drink or smoke.

Paul McCartney is pushing 68 and I think, from the picture, Tom looks younger and more healthy than Sir Paul.

And, to David S. (2nd blog) I also figured he was older than 69. I thought I was in my teens when he was a big singing star.

I guess it all depends upon perception. Clint Eastwood will be 80 in May and he looks 10 years older than Tom Jones.

Lastly, acute laryngitis is not life threatening. Must be a slow news day.

I agree that if Charlie leaves the show is pretty much finished, I feel bad for Jon Cryer who plays Alan and Angus that plays Jake, they have no choice in the matter. To bad Charlie cant just sober up and go on but I know its not that easy to do.
