Tiger Woods answered questions during a press conference today in Augusta, GA, after his first practice round leading up to the Masters tournament. "It's been an incredible experience so far here at the Masters," he told reporters.
Woods explained he was grateful for fans support, given his recent troubles. "I've done some things that are horrible. To the fans that want to see me play golf again -- that felt great," Tiger said of getting back out on the course.
"Winning golf tournaments is irrelevant compared to all the damage I've caused," he explained of the hurt he caused his family.
Reporters asked surprisingly tough questions -- many of which he smartly deflected. They challenged him about his rehab, if he ever took performance enhancing drugs, about his behavior in the past and his links to a doctor who is under investigation.
"I've never taken any illegal drug ever," Woods said.
He admits he didn't know when he would return to the green. "When I gave my speech in February, I had no intentions of playing golf in the near future," he claimed. "The reason why I didn't come back and play earlier than that ... was because I wasn't ready for it," the golfer added.
"I've had a lot of support [from my family]," he answered when a reporter asked if his family had anything to do with the decision to play again.
As for the effect his infidelity scandal has had on his relationship with his children, Woods expressed remorse. "I missed my son's first birthday, and that hurts a lot," Tiger said. (He was in rehab for sex addiction at the time.)
The four-time Master's champ also revealed that his wife would not be coming to the tournament.
He made it clear that his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus' record is different now. "It's not about championships, it's about how you live your life."
"I need to be a better man," Tiger clarified.
He was further interrogated over whether or not he was on Ambien during the car crash, replying that the police had investigated and fined him $166. Of his fellow golfers, Woods said, "Everyone's been great."
"It's that first tee that I'm looking forward to," he said at one point.
I think Tiger Woods is a fallible human being like the rest of us. Yes, he got out of control--but he still is the very best golf player around. I'm watching him for his game, not because I ever expected him to be a moral exemplar. It's taken courage on his part to return to the links--and I think we should let the guy play golf and back off his personal life.
Tiger, get your own security and leave the "plain-clothed" FBI people out of it. You got your break when you weren't prosecuted by the State of Florida-stop making the taxpayers pay for your mistakes as you're doing by having the FBI provide security for you!
I think that any celebrity should have a responsibility to the fans. If he cant live to a certain standard, it is truely time for the fallen to get out of the spotlight. He should retire and the press should stop making such a spectical of him. Role models should know better and if they cant handle the pressure, it is time to leave. I also think that it the publics role to hold them to their image and be the ones to call for him to leave and go hide his lifestyle!
It seems to me, that you can't be a celebrity, beg for privacy and expect it, when you make poor choices. Athletes, movie stars, politicians, etc. can't have their cake and eat it , too!

I totally agree. Let him play golf for us and deal with his personal life for him and his family.

First Woods says winning the Masters is irrelevant. Then at the end, he says he is there to win the thing.Hmmm, he is really a bozo.

I agree with Montalban-who does he think he is tying up FBI agents so he can feel safe from his hoes while playing golf?
And if winning is "irrelevant" to him, why did he bother to return NOW? He could've retired forever for all I care.

Woods will be playing more than eighteen holes a day. You can bet on it!
