Melissa and Tammy Etheridge Split After Nine Years

After nearly nine years together, Melissa and Tammy Etheridge have ended their relationship.

"Melissa and Tammy Etheridge are saddened to announce that they are now separated," Melissa's rep tells PEOPLE.

In a statement, the couple adds, "We ask for consideration and respect for our family as we go through this difficult period."

The rocker and 'L Word' actress exchanged vows in Malibu in September 2003. While the statement from the publicist described the rocker and actress as "married," California law did not allow marriages between same-sex couples at the time. Once same-sex marriage was legally recognized in California in 2008, the two planned to wed but they never made it down the aisle.

Tammy gave birth to their children, son Miller and daughter Johnnie Rose, in 2006.

Etheridge is also mom to two other children, Bailey, 13, and Beckett, 11, with former partner Julie Cypher.

Why do yall have to criticize everyone! Why do people think gay marriage is so horrible, if two people love each other why does it matter? stop being so hypocritical we don't sit here and try to get yall to turn gay or lesbian do we? We don't get on here hating about how you live your life and how its so wrong.. people just need to grow up and realize life isnt like it was in 1950 ok? things change i mean obviously we have a black president and yall wanna hate on the gays GROW UP!! we are all equal and should be treated equal.. god bless

Oh, but the gay agenda in America and elsewhere DOES try to make us all gay or at least gay sympathizers. I tried to wear my "Heterosexual Pride" shirt here in Portland and met with icy indignation. I thought it was okay to be proud of whoever you are, but we straights can see through the rhetoric and we are beginning to understand that it's not really about equality at all. Remember, anyone who tries to force others to accept their point of view is a fascist.

And i have never met a gay that has ever tried to change a straight person.. im just saying i think we should all be treated equally i mean i'm a lesbian i've only been out for 2yrs but when i came out i think im happier now that people actually know and none of my family judges me, my dad doesnt approve but he loves me and doesnt criticize at all.

Linda yea we are your childrens' role models just like you are for ours. That is scary to me that you are my kids role model with your judgemental self so full of anger. LIke a lot of you straight people that judge gays are such good role models. I don't teach my children to judge straight people so back off some of you are so ignorant. Yea gays break up just like straights. They hurt, laugh, cry, bleed and some try to make a positive difference because they know how difficult this world. is.

Divorce rates amoung all couples is way too high but once they start tracking these statistics amoung gay couples it's going to be quite clear that their relationships are even way more unstable then heterosexuals are.

Fim, No I don't believe the news they exaggerate just like the bible. I do talk to God I do not need a bible to do that. When anything is written by man as the bible it is not all of God but involve being subjective. My God does talk to me and tells me not to believe all I hear.

John having a father figure is over rated. Look at the role models of a lot of these men not all men and even women who cheat on their spouses.
My father was a womanizer, gambler and verbally abusive to us
so I would have perferred two loving women raising me. I am not saying all gay relationships are loving just like all straight relationships are not loving and some are.
