Melissa and Tammy Etheridge Split After Nine Years

After nearly nine years together, Melissa and Tammy Etheridge have ended their relationship.

"Melissa and Tammy Etheridge are saddened to announce that they are now separated," Melissa's rep tells PEOPLE.

In a statement, the couple adds, "We ask for consideration and respect for our family as we go through this difficult period."

The rocker and 'L Word' actress exchanged vows in Malibu in September 2003. While the statement from the publicist described the rocker and actress as "married," California law did not allow marriages between same-sex couples at the time. Once same-sex marriage was legally recognized in California in 2008, the two planned to wed but they never made it down the aisle.

Tammy gave birth to their children, son Miller and daughter Johnnie Rose, in 2006.

Etheridge is also mom to two other children, Bailey, 13, and Beckett, 11, with former partner Julie Cypher.

I like how these people want all the adulation and publicity when they want to hawk something or for us, the public to buy their stuff but oh please keep away from us when we push you aside- no if you are a public person you get paid to be out there - people will nose dive into all your business public or private and in exchange we pay enormous sums to see your films, buy your cds and go to your concerts (which ever is appopros to whatever star) You earn millions from poor joes like me and stop your whining then when you are on the front apges- All publicity is just a part of your great good fortune- so many would exhange with you- people who can't afford to evn go to a Dr or pay for their child's education. So Please stop moaning.I am straight but will switch places with you. Not the same sex relationships but the rest of it.

They make a great case for not allowing adoption to gay couples too. The children always end up the victim in these gay relationships. It's hard enough growing up in a straight household. Think of all the added pressure on these kids now, and all the teasing at school because of the selfish desires of gay couples trying to act like their relationship is the norm. They (gays) just keep having more children by test tube or surrogate and create even more problems in our society, all for their own selfish needs. I am an adopted child and have no idea who my father is and it bothers me everyday, but there is nothing i can do about it. I say ban gay marriage and adoption, and give kids a fighting chance to turn out normal, without all the head trips your gay relationship brings.
