The late-night wars are pretty much over -- or at least on summer vacation until Conan O'Brien's show debuts this fall on TBS. Things have settled down, and yet David Letterman still can't resist throwing a few belated spitballs at Jay Leno.
Maybe you got a rueful chuckle out of the moment on Monday night's 'Late Show' when Letterman, talking to guest Dr. Phil McGraw, started making fun of Leno again, doing a squeaky-voiced imitation of the 'Tonight Show' host and calling him "a complete boob." But maybe you also thought, "C'mon, Dave, enough already."
Admittedly, it was Dr. Phil who raised the topic of the late-night wars, but Letterman, in response, said he missed the battles of January, when he repeatedly lampooned Leno for his role in O'Brien's ouster from NBC. "I couldn't get enough. I wish it was still going on," Letterman said, bringing back his squeaky-voiced Leno impersonation of three months ago. "We both got screwed," he whined, channeling Leno's sentiment on the Conan vs. Leno debacle.
Letterman added, in his own voice, "I said, 'Wait a minute Jay, you both got screwed -- but you're the only one who ended up with a show. How did you get screwed?'" This led, in turn, to Dave remarking that he'd known Jay for 35 years, and that, while everyone had always found Leno funny and lovable, "there's also this other side of him where, and I think he'd own up to it, that he's just a complete boob. He can't help himself."
Dr. Phil McGraw and David Letterman discuss the late-night wars
This sort of juvenile name-calling may be the 63-year-old comedian's stock in trade, but it's also getting pretty tiresome. Note to Dave: The war is over (for now, at least). Jay won. Conan lost. So did you, for that matter -- Leno is once again beating you in the ratings, as he did for 14 years before O'Brien's brief term as 'Tonight' host.
Your bitterness, which obviously goes back to 1991 (when NBC picked Leno over you to replace the retiring Johnny Carson at 'Tonight,' in large measure because Leno campaigned for the job and you didn't), is understandable, but it's no longer entertaining. You seemed to have taken a step toward reconciliation when you came up with the idea for that joint Super Bowl promo and invited Jay to your studio to film it, but Monday's remarks suggest your willingness to put your antipathy aside in the service of a really good joke was only temporary. Let it go, Dave, it's time to get over it and move on.
True, mini-brawls like this one attract attention to the 'Late Show' (and make videos like the clip of last night's remarks become viral hits), so, to the extent that we're all still talking about this the next day, Letterman's "boob" comment has had its desired effect. Which raises the question: Is Dave really still mad at Jay, or is this all for show? After all, Letterman made the statements during a jovial conversation with Dr. Phil, a man he otherwise mocks routinely as "that quack," unless Dr. Phil happens to be his guest. Then it's all mocking aside, and the two banter like old pals. Does Letterman's friendship with Leno also run deeper than his petty insults suggest?
After all, the Super Bowl reunion was Dave's idea, and even the "complete boob" comment was mixed in with a recollection of Dave's long friendship with Jay. Sometimes, I suspect that Dave and Jay, or Dave and Dr. Phil, or Jay and Conan, are secretly friends and drinking buddies behind the scenes, that they're multimillionaire versions of Ralph Wolf and Sam Sheepdog in those old Warner Bros. cartoons. They attack each other during their day jobs, but at the end of the day, they get together over a beer and laugh at how the public is lapping up tales of their hostility, when really, it's just a role they've chosen to play. Maybe we're the complete boobs for buying it, and for taking sides, when the truth is, none of these guys is getting screwed.
I use to watch Letterman but he keeps beating a dead horse. There plenty of things going on to get laughs. Move on Dave. Nobody cares anymore. Old news. Go screw somebody so they can bring that back up.
I agree Richard , That's why he isn't funny ..Who ever is writing his material should be fired , he's rather boring in my opinion , I haven't been able to stomach him since the 90's ..I would rather paint dry then to watch him !!!!
I used to watch David Letterman years ago he was funny. I have tried many times to tune into Dave's show, but without success, he is a bore and not funny. I like Jay's show much better it's upbeat and funny, especially headlines.
Sad thing is, the whole "late night" thing has gotten stale and unamusing. It's the same-old same-old now, back and forth, week after week. There's nothing fresh. Adult oriented humor has turned into silliness that MIGHT appeal to the kids that are in bed asleep. It's time for something new.
I'm not a really big fan of either late night show but at least Leno has some personality. Letterman is a sad, cranky old man, who stopped being funny years ago.
I never cared for Dave and used to watch Leno before the big change, when I still watched Leno and happily went to bed early after the news. Then when Dave was forced to fess up or pay up, I began watching him, just to hear it from him, rather than the gossip media. When Jay came back to his original time slot I was back with Jay, but I did flip to Dave last night and found Dr. Phil on with him and opted to watch that segment rather than the Housewives of NJ, being interviewed by Leno. I was not impressed with Dave's whining. Listen up, Dave, it's over. Get over it.
Letterman is a Pervert. He drank from his mothers breast until he was 50. He could only attract women he could force because they worked for him. His humor is for sickoes. If you are a follower of Letterman look in the mirror and seek help.
I always thought Letterman was hilarious. But, I stopped watching him when he ragged on Sarah Palin's daughter. People are sick of Letterman's whining about not getting the Tonight Show. Grow up Dave!.....you're not exactly on welfare...the best revenge is success.
Jay & Dave--both are getting boring. I LUV Craig Ferguson!!! He's youthful, funny, & an absolutely nice guy. He luvs being an American & tells it like it is. So Dave/Jay--lookout...Craig will be beating down both ur doors if u don't look out! He's got the "it" factor in late nite TV!

He rules? You sound like a 12 year old.
Who cares. We don't deal with either one of them in our lives.
Oh yeah, Go Leno!

I agree that Leno has some personality....in the same way that Paris Hilton has some talent. Blink and you'll miss it.
They should have gave Conan Letterman's spot then we wouldn't have to listen to his incessant whine.

Craig sucks.
Is it me or has Dave's wagon gone around the bend a bit. He seems to be quite flighty lately.
