Joey Lawrence Was Scared for His Baby's Life
Joey Lawrence and his wife Chandie Yawn-Nelson welcomed daughter Liberty Grace on March 4, and now the actor is opening up about the terrifying pregnancy to
Life & Style,
in an interview given exclusively to PopEater. Just six weeks after conceiving, Chandie was diagnosed with Rh disease, a blood disorder that could threaten a developing baby's red blood cells, which store iron and distribute oxygen to the body. The couple had to visit a specialist every 24 hours during the last two or three weeks of the pregnancy and had to fight for their daughter's life. "We were so worried. We wanted to get Libby out so bad," he said.

On March 4, a month before Chandie's due date, a decision was made: Libby was becoming lethargic because of rising red blood cell levels, so she had to be delivered prematurely.
"They handed her to me even before they cleaned her off," Joey said about Libby. "I held her for a second, and then they took her from me and locked her in a tube."
She was kept in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for the next five days.
Now, the two-month-old is healthy and at home with her parents and older sister Charli, 3. "Our family of four is perfect," Joey said.

I had RH disease. My mom was monitored closely throughout her pregnancy, and I was born about a week early. I had three blood transfusions and spend a week in the hospital. I am now 33 years old and just became a mother myself. As scary as it is, I am proof that fortunately there are no long term effects from RH disease. I wish Joey and is family well.

Joey Lawrence is BEAUTIFUL and so is his daughter!! My daughter had a life saving surgery when she was a couple of months old and there is no better feeling, to a parent, to have their precious baby home safely. I am extremely happy for him and his family that everything turned out positively.

Congratulations Joey! I am so glad your daughter is doing fine. Best wishes!!!

some people just dont understand, and always have to throw out smart and sarcastic remarks. I also am RH neg and I had to take shots before and after my pregnacy. The shot was called Rogram. Read up and think before you open your mouth. I am so happy your baby is ok.

Actually, Janet, before you tell people to "read up" on things.. maybe you should "read up" on what the injection is actually called.. Rogham, not "rogram". Just sayin'
Actually, KDR, the name of the immune globulin is Rhogam...get it, "Rh"-ogam?...Just sayin'
wooooaahh, Blossom!

Who the hell is Joey Lawarance

Maria, do you know how to read? They discovered it in the mother - Chandie - when they found out she was pregnant - at 6 weeks. That's when they began monitoring the pregnancy for this specific development to keep the baby's development on track. When it became clear that the shots weren't having the effect necessary and the baby was in jeopardy they delivered he early.
Quit screaming negligence. There was no negligence - just your ignorance.

LOL......oh my God...since when is just turning 34 considered old. What are you...like 11?? He's an actor and recording artist bringing attention to his daughters medical condition that may help others...that's about all the reason he needs to be on the internet. The bigger question would be....what are YOU doing on the internet

I'm also confused. Rhogam shots are used to prevent this..and have been for over 30 years. I am RH negative, children positive and both had no problems in the womb. I received on shot early in the pregnancy and another after giving birth to protect the next child. Haven't heard of anyone having a problem with RH for decades. Wonder if she had the shot and developed RH antibodies anyway?

Thank God his Baby Girl is healthy!

Congratulations on a healthy, beautiful baby girl. You should consider changing to a different OB doctor if you decide to have more children. Missing the RH factor is totally unexcuseable in this day. I have a negative RH factor and as soon as my daughter was born with a positive RH factor I was given a shot to make sure my future children would not be at risk and that was 31 years ago.

If ever there were proof that one should stay in the closet, you have just proven the point. Do us all a favor and climb back under your rock in the closet.

There's something missing in this story. It states that the Rh factor was discovered at 6-weeks pregnancy. Did they not find this, and take the proper precaution, with her first pregnancy?
No place in the article did it state that the usual preventive care was used and that it failed. Now it's too late. Her body has already formed the antibodies which would attack any future Rh-positive babies. This is a rare occurrance in this modern-day obstetrics field. We need more info, please.
