Is Christina Aguilera's 'Not Myself Tonight' Video a Step Backwards?
Christina Aguilera is bringing dirty back with the video for her new single, 'Not Myself Tonight,' ditching the motherly, good-girl image she cultivated following her raunchy buttless chaps days. Christina sings that she's "not the same girl" ... and maybe she isn't, because despite our longtime love for her -- and her videos -- we can't help but feel like we're looking at an over-sexed stunt when really all we want is our gorgeous, sultry Christina back. Or, in more song-appropriate terminology, we want Christina, not X-Tina.
Our reasoning, plus the risque video everyone's talking about ... after the jump!
The Hype Williams-directed video
premiered on Aguilera's Web site at midnight in support of her upcoming album, 'Bionic.' Let's just say it makes the racy chaps she wore in 'Dirrty' look downright demure.
Christina literally sets her closet on fire in the steamy video -- and all that remains is jewel-encrusted bondage gear, skimpy red lingerie and a braless leather jumpsuit that warrants a little blurry censorship bar over her bosom. We're not sure we're allowed to describe a lot of what she's doing in the video in print, but we can say that pasties are worn, dog bowls are licked and birds are flipped -- all before she finally hits the bedroom with a hot male model in a romp that is likely to get the Parents Television Council in a tizzy.
(See for yourself below.)
The Grammy-winning songstress first began shedding her naughty image in 2002 with inspirational tunes like 'Beautiful' and an image that was more fully-clad Celine Dion than belly-baring Britney Spears. Then she married producer Jordan Bratman and released a romantic video from their 2006 wedding set to her soulful song 'You Saved Me From Myself.' Two years later, she appeared serene and Earth Mothery in the first photos with son Max, now 2, on the cover of PEOPLE magazine. Christina was warm and mature -- and frankly, we kinda liked the whole softer side thing.
Little did we know her pregnancy would inspire "a more sexual Christina," as she described herself in a recent radio interview. Aguilera said, "Once you bounce back [from pregnancy] and kind of get your body back ... it's a great feeling." Of course, we don't blame her for wanting to flaunt her post-baby body. In fact, we salute her for regaining her 'Genie in a Bottle' era abs.
However, it seems a little suspect to us that Aguilera is returning to her naughty-girl image and baring more than ever before at precisely the same time she is releasing her first studio album since 2006's 'Back to Basics.' The fact that she is nearly-naked in the 'Not Myself' video will cause a stir, get the blogosphere clicking ... and yes, get us to write this article. The video will almost definitely be forwarded among fans and voyeurs, who will warn their friends that it is borderline NSFW (but that really depends on where you work). All of that buzz may help Aguilera sell more albums when 'Bionic' drops on June 8. Sex does sell, after all, but it isn't terribly original.

As Christina fans, we know she can do better. She saluted her love of jazz and soul in the 'Candyman' video, complementing her saucy lyrics with a vintage white suit, sailor's cap and gorgeous cherry red lipstick. She chilled out in a hoodie, engineering her own neo-Catwoman adventure, in the 'Keeps Getting Better' video, released in 2008. For the star-studded 'Lady Marmalade,' Christina's fishnets and garters fit the boudoir bill. And in the aforementioned 'Dirrty,' Christina got down in a boxing ring, spouting some pretty naughty lyrics but seeming tough and gritty. For some reason, those glimpses of her booty in the middle of the group dance numbers just didn't seem as gratuitous as the skin in her new video.
After creating all of these colorful characters, it's a little disappointing to see Christina just take it all off (except for a pair of pasties) again. We're all for sex appeal -- but at least rip a page from Madonna's book and make it innovative and interesting. (Stripping down to her bra was too easy for Madge -- so she opted for the cone variety and started a sensation!)
In this regard, Christina could also pick up a tip from Lady Gaga, whom she is often accused of copying, despite having a decade of platinum hair and shocking eye makeup on her. Gaga and Beyonce's 'Telephone' video proved that soda can hair rollers and a rotary-phone headdresses are more eye-popping than any lingerie.
We're not suggesting Christina pull on a pair of mom jeans and a turtleneck, though with her assets, she'd probably look great if she did. We respect her right to get in touch with her sexy side and we don't want her to give it up, but after watching her grow up, get wild and then chill out with marriage and birth, we'd like to see more of her softer, motherly side.
Cheesy, we know, but we picked up the whole inner beauty thing from Christina herself -- the 'Beautiful' video is one of our personal favorites.

Christina...pew
Tidya you are joking right? She got up went to work and made a video to sell a cd, it is acting. What does her job have to do with her personal life? It's ignorant to think that the type of video she makes has any bearing on her marriage. When an actress does a movie with a sex scene, does that mean her marriage is in jeopardy?
"To bad for her husband, because when a woman begins to act out it's usually to late to stop her"
WTF!!! since when is it a husband's job to control his wife and keep her from "acting out". You make it sound like she is a child. I don't care if you're a woman, this is totally sexist and f***ed up.
Christina;
Why all the effort to be someone you're not and don't want to be - at least anymore? You're already there!

does anyone think she made this because it looked FUN?...i mean all the crazy clothes and such,,,sometimes girls really do just wanna have fun!...geeez.

I think you have to keep it crazy or things get boring. I feel her new song/video is about stepping out of the MOM role and into the role as a sexy wife ready to have fun.
I like it! I see a lot of references to Madonna's early videos. Nice way to pay homage to Madonna!

That is the same way I see it. I kept thinking..I remember seeing that in a Madonna video. But, I am old enough to remember Madonna making videos.
She's just a blatant copy-cat. I doubt if Madonna would feel flattered. Christina needs to get her own identity instead of trying to copy Madonna or Lady Gaga. And before that she was channeling Marilyn Monroe. Doesn't this girl have any original ideas of her own?
all y'all say copy cat when all artist copy one another...i love xtina side and i will be buying the cd....i love x tina, and lady gaga ....
GOOO LADIES AND F THE HATERS!!! YA'LL NEED GIRL POWER!!!

There is nothing orignal about any of it... from the Madonna copy in the song ( the line "I'm not sorry") to the Lady Gaga look and dance moves. The song sucks and so does the video. She can copy, but she will never be as good as either one of them. Her and Britney are cut from the same cloth. Only difference is.. Christina can sing. But you could have the greatest voice in the world, and if you dont have good songs to sing...it still sucks.

I say go for it Christina. I like that she is always doing something different than the last time. Next record will probably be a disc of standards with an elegant image. As for the Lady Gaga references, I see alot more Madonna here. Rubber suit from Human Nature. Sets that look similar to Express Yourself. Etc. Christina isn't all shock value. She has the vocal chops to back it up.

indeed . many more madonna references.and christina was doing this way before gaga..just saying.
Iloveit!!!!!!!! I like the naughty Christina.... she is fun.....

Cristina.
Find yourself. This Video is so derivative of Lady Gaga it's sad. Don't listen to your 'handlers' and follow your own gut.
You are not a copycat and you do have something to offer, just offer it up in the form of something that belongs to you.
Good Luck.

I hate to rain on your parade, but it's Gaga that copied Christina. Anyone agree out there?
Judy: Not once have I heard someone accuse Lady Gaga of copying Christina. She's a total original. And I think Gaga's voice is just as good, if not better, than Christina's. The Fame has a permanent place in the cd player in my car and her range is amazing! Christina needs to get her own image. She even channeled Marilyn Monroe for a while. Why does every celebrity that dyes their hair blond think they're the next Marilyn?
Nothing wrong with being sexy, but she's really trying way too hard. This video reeks of desperation. Instead of doing something different and leading the pack, she falls in to he same old thing over & over again: SEX. How boring. Even Lady Gaga is ordinary at this point. These "artists" need to understand that shock value only lasts so long... usually just 1 album. It'd be more shocking if she wore clothes & didn't over-sing for once.

What? Is she trying to be Lady GaGa? Doesn't work with her
Lady Gaga doesn't do what she does for the "shock value" as you put it. She does what she does because it is artistic and it is her way to express herself. If you don't like it, who cares? She has millions of Little Monsters (Myself proudly included) who love her for all she is and all she allows us to be. Love you Mother Monster
