Celeb Photographer Tyler Shields Shot Someone... With A Gun
By Ben Trivett Posted May 3rd 2010 11:35AM

We were able to catch up with Tyler, and he shared a little about his 'Collision' series. "Collisions are made using a new technique created by me. What you are seeing is one image taken with one camera with no Photoshop, all in camera. 'Collisions' are an exact representation of my memories and my dreams."
Tyler has made quite a name for himself in the world of celebrity photography. His no-holds-barred approach to getting the right images is a perfect match for the celebrity subjects he chooses. When asked about how he creates these images, Tyler said, "Every single person who has seen 'Collision' has asked me how I do it, but i would rather keep that secret to myself." Well Tyler, more power to you.
Now, back to shooting someone at the party. Tyler said on his blog, "Oh and you may have heard that I shot someone with a gun during the party. This is true. It was planned and all safety precautions were taken and it was performed with a professional." This seems like a risky stunt, but we'd expect nothing less. All in all, this sounds like a great night for a great project.
Art, celebrities and a shooting. We look forward to seeing more great
work from Tyler soon.

He is either using image overlay in camera or more likely projecting two images on a screen and then photographing it. He did not invent this.

Gerald is a hater, BUT he is correct that these photographs aren't groundbreaking or revolutionary. Photographers have been doing these kind of shots forever.
I'll give Tyler Shields credit for the artistic juxtaposition of the images, but he's being a douche for claiming that this is going to change photography forever.

Gerald,
Being a formally trained visual artist myself, I can attest to the fact that your impression of how Tyler Shields' creates his Collisions is RIGHT ON THE MONEY!!! He is either shooting a double exposure in camera, or he is photographing two or more super-imposed images from off of a projection screen. Anyone who has studied the visual arts or photography knows that what Tyler Shields is offering here as far as innovation is definitely NOT NEW. Man Ray was making photographs using similar techniques back in the teens and twenties of the 20th Century...

yeah i was going to say the same thing his technique is not new.. or is it a "secret" thats worth keeping. they also do it in old films alot during the silent era. its really not a hard technique to master but yes it does have beautiful results.

Yeah, this is definitely not a new technique. I don't agree with him when he says it's going to revolutionize photography. Gem, maybe you haven't seen any art pieces like Tyler's because you haven't been looking. He isn't doing anything new. It's just another version of photomontage, which really took off in the teens and 20's with the Dada movement (Hannah Hoch is one of my personal favorites). Someone else mentioned Man Ray. Check out Jerry Uelsmann who is contemporary and does all of this in the darkroom. Oscar Reijlander (who first did this is 1857!!), Laszlo Maholy-Nagy (should I keep going????).

It really doesn't matter what anyone says love , if it makes you happy to do this then do it ! I think they are wonderful ! Life is short do what you love to do ! I'd really like to see more .

It's just a bad idea to play games with guns that way. Whether he faked it with a blank or he used a standard round, it's a bad idea.

The collision pictures are pretty cool, and very well done, but as far as I can tell it is a very simple technique of double exposure. He's done it beautifully, but it not so much of a secret really.
