Roman Polanski Breaks Silence, Says U.S. Wants to 'Serve Me on a Platter'

Roman Polanski has broken his silence after months of being under house arrest, saying prosecutors in the United States only want him extradited on a 33-year-old sex case to humiliate him and cause a media circus.
In comments to an online magazine run by one of his supporters, Polanski said: "I can no longer remain silent because the United States continues to demand my extradition more to serve me on a platter to the media of the world than to pronounce a judgment concerning which an agreement was reached 33 years ago."
Polanski laid out his case while being holed up in his Alpine Swiss chalet.
"I have had my share of dramas and joys, as we all have, and I am not going to try to ask you to pity my lot in life," he wrote. "I ask only to be treated fairly like anyone else."
Polanski suggests the case against him is unjust and riddled with problems. Each argument begins with the phrase: "I can remain silent no longer."
One of Polanski's complaints concerns Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley, "who is handling this case and has requested (the) extradition, is himself campaigning for election and needs media publicity!" Cooley is running for California attorney general.
The district attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said the office "will withhold comment until the Swiss make a decision on his fugitive status."
Polanski fled the United States in 1978 on the eve of sentencing; he had pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual contact with a minor. Her attorney argued she had the right to ask that the case be dismissed and urged the court to do so.
Polanski was accused of plying the teen with champagne and part of a Quaalude pill, then raping her during a modeling shoot at Jack Nicholson's house in 1977.
Polanski was initially indicted on six felony counts, including rape by use of drugs, child molesting and sodomy. He later pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse in a plea bargain.

Polanski has escaped for 33 years and lived the good life. It won't be a "media circus" unless he keeps running his flap...

Polanski is a rapist, plain and simple. He belongs in a American prison for the rest of his sorry life. Hes a coward for running, and hiding all these 33 years. That alone says it all, hes as guilty as anyone can get.

I find it hard if not impossible to feel sorry for a child molestor and hope he gets life in prison. However i also find it hard to have sympathy for the girl at this point as she doesn't want to testify against him and as she says she wants it put behind her. This only meqans he paid her to keep quiet with a non-disclosure clause in the settlement. I would respect her more if she wanted justice. She should think about the other children he probably molested.

Have some sympathy- a child was drugged/raped, and 30 some odd years later doesn't want to relive the moment in front of friends and family and media hounds with no tact or boundaries.
I wouldn't serve him up on a platter. I'd serve him up on a broomstick. then I'd make the SOB lick it clean.

The mother of the raped female, made a deal with him. I wonder why the mother wasn't put in jail. What makes him think, he should not do time?

The mother did not want to drag the kid through court....the kid (now an adult female) STILL does not want to go to court. Even though the act was still rape because of her age, has it occurred to anyone that she was a WILLING participant in this? Thirteen year olds having sex goes on every day, with other minors and/or with adults. Is this case different because Mr. Polanski is famous?
Note to Polanski: in the USA it is legal to campaign for election but not legal to rape a 13 year old girl and jump bail.

What does he expect? He pled guilty, reached an agreement on his sentencing, then fled the country before the actual sentencing. Does he expect some preferential treatment because of who he is? If he hadn't fled the country all those years ago this would all be behind him now.

I hope he winds up in Prison for the rest of his life, let the Prisoners take care of him! They Love Child Rapest! Am sure justice would be served.

What a sick, sick littel man you are. The US is doing the right thing here and you should pay for your perverted acts.

Let's let every criminal spend their "time" in Europe.
Does he feel he's too good to be punished. His publicist
is working overtime..... He molested a child!!!! What
does he want. Get him over here and punish him. Talk about
political aspects of the case - does he feel being in the
movie industry excuses him????

the victmin of a crime can not stop the prosecution of the crime. to try and excuse a child rape is just nuts. he fled because he did not want to pay for his crime. now it's time to pay. suck it up child raper and do your time. boy would i be proud to be his child .

"I ask only to be treated fairly like anyone else."
Seriously? How is it fair that you drugged and took advantage of a child? How is it unfair that you pleaded guilty and then took off like a scared little kid? You deserve to be in jail, and that is only fair

While I find his actions some 33 years ago absolutely vile, I respect the victims wishes. It could be that her experience was very traumatizing to her young psyche and she truly doesn't want the memories dredged up in the media. I do feel however that if he does get extradited it would serve him right for what he did and then fleeing.

wow. gall. thine name is polanski. the guy is a child rapist and can actually stomach saying that crap?!?!
so the priests and bishops that raped little choir boys really should take the same line of defense imo. 'it was so long ago, c'mon get over it.' *shakes-head* wow. just wow.
shoot this guy and be done with it. he couldn't do a little time (yeah, it wasn't even like 10-yrs.). he's above the law. it doesn't pertain to him because he's famous, talented, rich, etc. end-sarcasm.

The girl has asked MANY times that the case be dropped. I believe some years ago that Roman paid her some sort of settlement.

the fact that he stayed away for 33 years, shows that, he himself, knows he's guilty. He's just a coward who doesn't want to go to prison.

Look Polanski did the crime NOW he has to do the time! Whats to discuss, what he did was rape a young girl and now he wants everyone to "forget about it" no way why should he walk anyone else would have to do time, well so should he. Maybe he is afraid to be in prison, cant say I blame him but hey, should of thought anout that BEFORE you took advantage of a young girl. Sry Roman no tears here!!!!

If he had done his time instead of fleeing before sentencing, then it would have been fair. Plying a 13 or 14 year old with drugs and alcohol and then raping and sodomizing her over her protests is just not very savory behavior, Mr. Polanski, and neither is running from punishment. There is no defense for your behavior in my eyes, and you ought to do your time now. You ought to have done it then.
