The nominees for the Tony Awards were announced this morning, and some of Hollywood's biggest names were among those celebrated for their work on the New York stage. Scarlett Johansson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jude Law, Kelsey Grammer and Denzel Washington are among the nominees for the 64th annual ceremony, which airs June 13 at 8PM on CBS.
The Green Day rock opera 'American Idiot' scored a nomination for Best Musical, with the musicals 'Fela!' and 'La Cage au Folles' (which stars Grammer) leading all nominees with 11 each.
Johansson's nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play seems particularly sweet, as it comes not only for her Broadway debut but just days before the blockbuster release of 'Iron Man 2.' She co-stars with fellow nominee Liev Schreiber in a revival of Arthur Miller's 'A View From the Bridge.'
Schreiber will compete for Best Actor in a Play opposite a host of Hollywood heavyweights, including two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington ('Fences'), Christopher Walken ('The Behanding in Spokane') and Jude Law ('Hamlet'). Washington's 'Fences' co-star Viola Davis -- herself a recent Oscar nominee for 'Doubt' -- will vie for Best Actress in a Play with Laura Linney ('Time Stands Still') and Valerie Harper -- whose performance as Tallulah Bankhead in 'Looped' was praised as "dazzling" by PopEater's own Rob Shuter.
Grammer will go toe-to-toe in the Best Actor in a Musical category with one-time fellow NBC comedy star Sean Hayes ('Will & Grace'), who is nominated for the revival of 'Promises, Promises.' Zeta-Jones and her 'A Little Night Music' co-star, the legendary Angela Lansbury, both landed nominations in the musical categories, as well – for Best Lead Actress and Best Featured Actress, respectively.
The Tony Awards are considered the highest honor in the theater world. For a complete list of nominees, visit the Tony Award's Web site.
I'll be the first one to admit that the only reason we read about other peoples lives is because "we have nothing better to do" at that moment and winters in New York are cold and long. So...that said....who cares who is dating who! And who is so upset about the brake up! People, it happens all the time to everyone, deaths, breakups, get over it Johansson, you are one of the most beautiful woman on the planet I'm sure you will find someone "real soon"!! And just one more thing...why do all white celebs adopt black babies and multiple births?? I know the multiples is because of the fertility clinics, but what up with the blackies?? Stop trying to make a statement, you look stupid and ridiculous, I bet if you were not a celeb you wont be adopting black babies or any other baby!
