Pit Bull Takes a Bite Out of Vanessa Carlton's Leg

Singer-songwriter Vanessa Carlton is taking antibiotics and recovering nicely after being bitten by a pit bull while jogging in northeastern Pennsylvania, her father said.
Ed Carlton told the
Pocono Record that the 'A Thousand Miles' star was running on May 2 when as she passed a neighbor's house, a 9-month-old pit bull named Bella ran through its invisible fence and chomped down on the singer's calf. She hobbled home with a bleeding leg marked with five puncture wounds.

Doctors are monitoring her for any infections, but she is expected to be fine. The dog, however, may not be so lucky. Animal control officials have put Bella under a 10-day home quarantine, as a precaution against rabies or a change in behavior.
Bella's owners, Ben and Jo Anne Teichberg, said Ed and Vanessa Carlton confronted them two days after the attack and said they wanted the dog put down.
"They are branding Bella as a dangerous animal and want her put to death," owner Ben Teichberg told the Record. "They said because Bella is a pit bull, it is known to be bad."
There were no witnesses to the bite, and the head of dog law enforcement at the state Dept. of Agriculture said Carlton has not filed a written complaint yet.
Carlton, 26, is a three-time Grammy nominated singer-pianist, but has not released an album since 2007.

Did these people really think an invisible fence would prevent a pit bull from running off the yard? That is pretty dumb!

AMEN!!!! i have a german shepherd. she is the most wonderful dog in the world. she has gotten out of the yard a few times, but has NEVER tried to attack anyone. if they came into my yard or house, that would be a different story..... pit bulls SUCK. they are not tempred or as intelligent as german shepherds.
APBT are a joy to own and should be handled with a higher level of responsibility than other breeds. 9 mo. old pits are like teenagers and need better supervision than an invisible fence when training to stay on the home front. I blame the owners for not protecting their pet by keeping her safely
Well the bottom line is that this dog attacked someone. That makes her a dangerous pet. Don't get me wrong, I love pit bulls and own one myself but you can never be too careful.
9 months old is a puppy. Ignorant owners! Prey drive inevitable sequence: search, eye-stalk, chase, grab bite, kill bite. In dog breeds these steps could be amplified or reduced by selective breeding. APBTs have an amplified grab bite. Plus, ancestors of APBTs were bred for tenacity. That means they will ignore pain. EVERY PIT PUPPY SHOULD BE GIVEN BITE INHIBITION TRAINING.
First of all...kill the dog.As a matter of fact...kill ALL pitbulls and then kill any moron who owns, wants to own or thinks pits are just another breed of dog. Then two bullets in the back of the head for all idiots who will write and say how wonderful, loving etc they are if you TRAIN them correctly.
Yes retard, you can TRAIN these monsters in waiting to not do what they are genetically wired to do....NOT
They need to use a Boat chain for a Pit
I have been around dogs all my life. It is the ignorance of the owners, not the breed. All dogs bite at any given time. You need to socialize dogs when they are puppies. Those of you who say kill all pit bulls, are scared of them and really do not know much about their other good qualities, so you do not know what you are talking about. I do not and have never owned a pit bull. It is people who are the ones that make mistakes with all animals. If you do not understand the breed and do not know what you are doing, don't get a pit bull and make the animal suffer because of your stupidity.
Folks, again look at how the MEDIA MORONS get away with LIES and innuendo and other means to sell a story. The woman was BITTEN -- PERIOD. THERE WAS NO "BITE OUT OF HER LEG" -- NO LARGE PORTION OF FLESH AND MUSCLE MISSING, which "out of her leg" implies. THESE BASTARDS HAVE TO STOP WITH THE MIS-LEADING TRICKS THAT THEY DO, USUALLY RESULTING IN A "STORY" WHERE NONE EXISTS. This story is basically a "no big deal" story. A woman got BIT, and is being medically treated. PERIOD!!!! I DESPISE THE MEDIA MORONS AND YOU SHOULD TOO.
hey bill why dont you get facts before you open your d-c-suc=-r. pits are breed to be loyal family dogs. do u own a pit bill? didnt think so and if the dog was attack the lady she would have more then teeth marks. the PUPPY was most likely playing. so all you people who give your two cents about a dog you never owned or had experiance shut it! how many of you clicked on the story because it said pitbull attacks? almost all of you i bet. the name sells who knows if it was enen a pitbull. did the owner supply the picture i seriously doubt it. it's just a pic the author pulled of the web
You suck! My Staffordshire Pit Bull Terrier is the sweetest dog you ever imagine. If you recall, not all that long ago, German Shepards were given the same bad name. You of all people, shouldn't be so quick to judge. You don't know the animal at all.
To all of you people that are defending this breed of dog, thinking that it is how the dog is trained and raised weather or not it will attack, you are all insane. A very good friend of mine got a pit bull puppy when their child was 2. This animal was put through training and was around other dogs at dog parks and around other children w/o problems for three years. One day this dog snapped (no apparent reason) A beautiful 5 year old little girl taken from her parents way to soon. Yes any dog can bite but if someone where able to get unlock this dogs jaw from this child's neck she would probably still be with us today. RIP Shannon
People think because its a pibull it is bad. Not all pitbulls are bad. No one knows exactly why this dog bit. But it deffinately wasnt because it was pitbull. I had a keeshound when I was a girl and the neighborhood kids teased him. One day he got out and bit the ups guy. That breed id not know for being mean. He was just getting him before he could tease him. I have had pitbulls for ever and never had a problem. I think the people should be required to put a real fence up. And the dog should be continued to be monitered for aggression. Not because hes pitbull but because he bit someone.

That is kind of like locking the barn door after the mule got out...
pits are killers.i was bit once and chased 4 times by these monsters.pits are mostly found in ghettoes at drug locations.if you see a pit , there's prolly drugs in that house.i do live in a mixed ghetto.right across the street from mush mouse and pumpkin puss.
I totally agree with you. Any dog can bite anyone. It should be watched because it bit, not because of the breed it is.
melissa, certain dog's are bred for certain things. To say " it definetly wasn't because it's a pit bull" is just a tad niave. Pointers point, Hounds were bred for tracking, i.e. the better noses were bred the lesser were not. I've know Pit Bulls that were as kind as kittens, but never ever piss one off. The owner's are idiots.
OK pit bull lovers...lets change the story slightly...not an unreal fairy tale, but a real life possibility.....say a 5year old scampered past and this pit bull bite at the same height-the kids head, crushing it and killing the child
The Pit Bull is the most maligned dog in the USA a reputation won by its original purpose in life plus actions of a few idiot owners who have one for the "bad" image.
I have experienced these dogs and have found them to be exceedingly intelligent, kind natured and very loyal. They are also very protective of territory like most dogs; this puppy was likely defending hers when this young lady jogged by. Either that or at 9 months old, her playfulness got the better of her. BTW, an invisible fence would not confine a Pit Bull; one of their strongest points is their ability to withstand a lot of pain.

"Her Playfulness got the better of her"????
You have got to be kidding!
She ran through an invisible fence and chomped down on the girl's leg!
Sorry to tell you, but that is NOT being playful!
And the girl was jogging in the STREET! Not the yard!
When is the street considered personal property?
The dog should be put down. An 9 month old dog...already attacking and biting someone, is a recipe for disaster....What are they waiting for? The dog to attack and kill a child?
