Andy Rooney Wishes He Understood Justin Bieber
Andy Rooney has a handle on music legends like Ella Fitzgerald as well as younger stars nearing retirement age, but bring up singin' whippersnappers like
Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, and his 91-year-old head gets filled with confused crickets.
The '60 Minutes' writer-humorist began his weekly rant on Sunday innocently enough, with an observation that as a "dead center, average American," he should be able to understand and follow the musical trends of the day. He's "heard of Sting and the Rolling Stones," but after perusing a Billboard magazine recently, his eyes were met with a slew of unfamiliar names on the best-seller list.
"The singers I know have been replaced by Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Usher," he lamented, adding, "I mean, who?" for good measure.
"They're selling millions of songs by singers that I've never heard of, and that must mean I'm out of the American mainstream -- and definitely not average."
Rooney's crankiness towards the kids these days has him bummed and wondering why age is such a divider when it comes to the music we listen to.
"Age doesn't separate us in other areas," he said. "We all like comfort, beauty, ice cream on a sunny day, a win for our favorite team."
But in the end, Rooney essentially admits the futility of trying to understand popular music: "I don't know who Lady Gaga is, and kids today probably don't know who Ella Fitzgerald is. Maybe we should call it even."

Andy, I am with you. If you happen to watch American Idol, you would have seen Gag Gag's total outrageous and raunchy moves that only belong in the bedroom with the door shut and the shades down.
And Bieber, I do not get him either.
I love Ella Fitgerald and Lenna Horne and too many others to name.
And I am only 47.

The musings from an old man who needs to retire. I do not understand or like this generations music either but so be it.

I understand how Andy Rooney feels. If I live to be his age, I probably would not know or like the future singers who will most likely be worse than Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber.

What an idiot

I'm old but I love the current music. There are many tremendously talented people performing and writing music. The old stuff was good in its day, but this is a new day. Keep us or live in a rut.

I think I prefer the rut!
willie i could not have said it better! When will they go away?

Justin Bieber is the Leif Garrett of today. There is NOTHING special about him, and he looks a little girlish too, but so did Garrett. Twenty-five years from now, he'll be the one on the "smoking gun."

I think that many young people would know who Ella Fitzgerald is.

This Justin kid is alittle twit, I just don't get him does he have any talent at all or is it just little horney 14 year olds
Reply
wow. i am not a fan of Justin. But do you 80 year olds hear how you're making fun of a 16 year old kid?!?! i mean really if he was your great-grandkid would you want some random people making fun of him just because he has millions more dollars and fans than you'll ever have?!?!
