Cynthia Nixon: Publicist Didn't Want Me to Come Out

Cynthia Nixon, launching into the the year's most grueling media blitz this side of 'Iron Man 2,' is a far cry from famously heterosexual Miranda Hobbes on 'Sex and the City.' The breast cancer survivor spent 15 years with a man -- with whom she had two children -- before ending up with Christine Marinoni, her female partner of the past six years.

In a new interview with The Advocate, Nixon talks candidly about coming out (her first publicist shunned it), her take on sexuality ("We're all bisexual") and how she sees Christine (you'll be surprised).

Nixon tells The Advocate she hired her first publicist to help her deal with the new volley of questions about her sexuality. "He was a very nice man who I won't name, but he does have a number of clients who are closeted," she said, adding that the publicist insisted they kill all rumors and deny Nixon was dating a woman. "He just kept saying, 'It's your life, and it's private, and that's it.' And we kept asking, 'That's the whole thing? We never move past that? We're at the playground with the kids, and pictures are taken of us, and we say, 'No, she's my friend?'" Nixon didn't remain with the publicist for long.

She eventually hired Kelly Bush, an openly gay publicist who works with Tobey Maguire and Dustin Hoffman. Bush proposed a simple approach -- confirming the rumors. "And I was like, 'Really, we can just confirm?' So that's what we did. It was so fantastic," Nixon said.

Nixon and Marinoni met in 2001 and began dating in 2004. "If anybody, prior to my meeting and falling in love with Christine, had asked me about what I think about sexuality, I would have said I think we're all bisexual. But I had that point of view without ever having felt attracted to a woman. I had never met a woman I was attracted to. Maybe if I'd met her when I was 20, I would have fallen in love and only dated women. But maybe if I'd met her at 20, I wouldn't have responded at all. Who knows? I feel like falling in love with her is part of being amazed at how she makes our family so much better."

The kids, 13-year-old Samantha and 7-year-old Charles, call Nixon "Mommy" and Marinoni "Ma." They were engaged a year ago.

How does Nixon describe her gal? "She's basically a short man with boobs," Nixon said, laughing. "A lot of what I love about her is her butchness. I'm not saying I fell in love with her in a sexually neutral way. I love her sexuality -- it's a big part of what I love about her -- but I feel like it was her. It wasn't something in me that was waiting to come out. It was like, 'This person is undeniable. How can I let this person walk by?'"

Nixon also says that red hair is purely a Miranda thing -- she eases her way back to blond when 'Sex' isn't filming. "My mother was asked one time, how is Miranda like me, and she said, 'Well, she looks very much like Cynthia.'" But not to everyone, apparently. "I was standing in line at the bank recently, and the teller was looking at me, and looking at my name, and she said, 'You know you have the same name as that woman on 'Sex and the City'?'"

And although Marinoni tends toward men's clothes, Nixon insists she's no fashion nut offscreen, saying, "Christine is the clothes shopper. I hate it."

I TOTALLY agree. Especially Samantha and Carrie. The producers of the show need to "hang it up." Do we all really want to watch a bunch of "old hags" trying to get it on with younger men. UGH! GROSS! Just think of their anatomy that sags at their age and up and I don't mean boobs!

Only gay people ever say this...mostly women who don't want to admit they slept with men until they had enough money to do what they wanted.
