The Cameron Diaz Effect: Is She Helping A-Rod's Game?

Alex Rodriguez has a new blonde for a new season. The Yankee slugger was caught nesting at the Liberty Hotel in Boston with new gal pal Cameron Diaz this week. The pair apparently spent their time nestled in their penthouse suite ordering room service, according to PEOPLE.

Cameron is the latest in a string of high profile lady friends for A-Rod, who told me in my story for Gotham only a couple of months ago that he was taking a hiatus from the star set. But the third baseman is hoping to avoid a repeat of last season's Kate Hudson debacle and has reportedly asked Cameron not to become a fixture at Yankee games this season. While Alex and Kate were dating, the Yankees did manage to win a little thing called the World Series, but A-Rod still endured plenty of teasing over his girlfriend rooting for him on from the stands.

But compared to how A-Rod's game was faring during his time with Madonna, Kate was a wonder drug. Still, she was a distraction Alex does not seem anxious to repeat.

"I think the fact that A-Rod's not letting Cameron attend games as much as Kate Hudson did is a good sign that he actually is focused," says Deadspin.com editor-in-chief A.J. Daulerio. "But, seriously -- what's with him and the old broads?"

Way harsh A.J.! True, Cameron is 37, three years older than Alex. But a much more suitable match than Madonna, who was 17 years the Yankee slugger's senior.

Allowing Kate at the games gave her access to all aspects of A-Rod's life; by keeping Cam out of the stadium, he gets to have some man time and then enjoy the actress in his minimal downtime.

But what is that downtime doing to his game?

Our sources say that the pair have been getting serious for a little over a month. That puts the start of their relationship right around opening day. And since the start of the season, A-Rod has been performing below his usual average. Things haven't been as dismal as Madonna-time, but not as great as Kate.

What we can say about Cam's influence on Alex is that we think she has made him a little bit funnier. His response to the whole Dallas Braden situation was, dare we say it, pretty snarky. Frankly, of all the blondes Alex has had in his dugout, Cameron is the one we are really rooting for. She's smart, successful, funny and she isn't a religious fanatic who has been around the bases more times than A-Rod. Here's to hoping this one lasts into the post season.

Sports fans want to know, which woman has helped A-Rod's game more. Based on the stat breakdown, the answer is Kate Hudson.

Here's a look at A-Rod in the last full month of the 2009 season. A-Rod's average for September with 26 games played: .337, with 14 runs scored, 30 hits, 5 home runs, 23 RBIs and an on-base percentage of .396.

Like this one's going to last. I hate when they refer to A-Rod's relationships as "serious". I'm a huge Yankees fan and I think Alex Rodriguez is a great baseball player, but he's another kind of player too.

Cameron Diaz is not aging so well. I guess all that surfing and being outdoors unprotected is starting to show on her face. I hope she had fun and it was all worth it.

and, I go outside fish, surf, run on the beach, etc...... My skin looks good because I take care of it...... and yes IT IS ALL WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anni, You sound very bitter. If you really were an outdoor type of person, you would be a happy camper. I love the outdoors, that's why I stay fit, but I do protect my skin and my children's. I hike, grow my own food, swim, fish, camp, and bike, and noticing Cameron's damaged skin doesn't make me jelous. I am a make up artist and I know that good skin is key to look good. I can also tell that C.D. has not paid much attention to it.

It won't be long before he cheats on Cameron, just like he did with Kate and his wife. But really, how insulting to Cameron...he doesn't want her at games and he won't go out in public with her? Can you say booty call? Cameron, don't let him use you like this!

My theory is this: Cameron doesn't want to go to the games because of the Jessica Simpson effect. She will be blamed for him not performing as well as he did when dating Kate,and she will be mocked. I have to say, I would do the same thing, so it's a smart strategy.
