Roman Polanski Has a Friend in Woody Allen

Woody Allen has pledged his support to Roman Polanski in the past -- even signing a petition calling for the director's release -- but the timing of his latest words of encouragement hints that the 'Annie Hall' director may not be keeping up on the news.

"It's something that happened many years ago ... he has suffered, he has not been allowed to go to the United States. He was embarrassed by the whole thing," Allen said in an interview Saturday with France Info radio at the Cannes Film Festival.

Allen continued: "He has paid his dues, he has had a hard life. The girl involved doesn't want anything to happen to him."

The 74-year-old director was speaking a day after British actress Charlotte Lewis accused Polanski of sexually abusing her when she was 16. The 'Golden Child' star, now 42, told reporters on Friday that Polanski victimized her "in the worst possible way" at his Paris apartment in the 1980s.

It's unclear whether Allen was aware of Lewis' allegations when he affirmed his support of Polanski in France.

Polanski pleaded guilty in 1978 to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl named Samantha Geimer. He was taken into custody in September and is currently under house arrest in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Allen's relationship with actress Mia Farrow ended in scandal and New York tabloid headlines in 1992, when she found out he was having an affair with her adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, then 22. Allen married Previn in 1997.

What a shock. Read Mia Farrow's book and hear all about how she found penetration marks in the panties of the daughter she had with Woody after an unsupervised visit with the perv. Pedophiles of a feather stick together!

You need to get your facts straight. This was NOT Woody's daughter with Mia Farrow. This was a girl she adopted with her previous husband, Andre Previn. She was also 22,so the term pedophile does not apply here. In fact, legally, he did nothing wrong. Morally however, he broke every taboo,tradition and sacrosanct emotional trust with Mia,by engaging in a sexual relationship with his step-daughter. The man is evil and soulless.

To Karen - well, you are correct in your facts, but you don't find it wrong that Woody was Soon Yi's step father since she was 10?? he basically raised her! And how do we know what age he started up with her? she finally admitted to it at 22, who knows what that sick soul was doing to that child.

I think the same as all the rest. Two sick human beings , the two of them. I was abused when I was a child. about 10 years old. No penetration ,just touching. I imagine raping a young girl is very tramatic since I am 70 years old now and I still remember the two times I was illegaly touched. Later in life I found out My two uncles did the same thing to 3 other females in my family. We told our mother but she didn't believe me. I still to this day hate the both of my uncles. It never goes away. I think R P should be prosecuted like any other sex offender. I think he should be put on trial and be made to pay the expenses for the trial from his own money. Strip him of all his money and give it to a program that helps kids who were abused.Also One more thing IF YOU KNOW OF A KID WHO IS BEING MOLESTED '' LISTEN TO THEM WHEN THEY TELL YOU. GET THEM HELP.''

I'm truly sorry that happened to you. I must agree with you as you obviously thought long and hard about the repercussions of what was done to you. Thank you for your honesty as it's easy to dismiss what Roman Polansky did (I've read the Vanity Fair article about that day he did it and it's sick stuff) but until a Woman or Man who abused as a Child speaks up like you, it just seems surreal. I thank you for your post as it made me rethink any doubt I had that Roman Polanski needs to finally face himself and California. He has harmed fellow humans.

Maybe the girl should have been Woodys daughter. How has he paid his dues exactly? I gues living in France with beautiful people making millions on movies you produced and avoiding jail because your a fugitive is payment. Being liberal has nothing to do with it! I am a liberal, but I definitely will never defend Roman Polanski. I think he should be brought back to this country and put in prison for the rest of his life. There's been no suffering on his part - he's been able to continue to make money and live the good life. I get fed up with celebrities who continue to back Polanski and think he should have the charges against him dropped, but I also get fed up with people claiming that liberals are the problem.

How do you possibly equate someone voting for a Democrat with a Pedophile?? Is there a trick to that? There's not and shame on you. There is also something wrong with your terminology. Liberal is now progressive and they did not vote Democrat. You really should cease you rhetoric and think for yourself. NO ONE believes his actions are "okay". No surprise to see Allen act as an apologist for Polanski. These guys are so disgusting women their own age want nothing to do with them, so they have to force themselves on little girls to get off. Once a perv, always a perv. The only reason they're not in jail is because they're rich.
