Roman Polanski Has a Friend in Woody Allen

Woody Allen has pledged his support to Roman Polanski in the past -- even signing a petition calling for the director's release -- but the timing of his latest words of encouragement hints that the 'Annie Hall' director may not be keeping up on the news.

"It's something that happened many years ago ... he has suffered, he has not been allowed to go to the United States. He was embarrassed by the whole thing," Allen said in an interview Saturday with France Info radio at the Cannes Film Festival.

Allen continued: "He has paid his dues, he has had a hard life. The girl involved doesn't want anything to happen to him."

The 74-year-old director was speaking a day after British actress Charlotte Lewis accused Polanski of sexually abusing her when she was 16. The 'Golden Child' star, now 42, told reporters on Friday that Polanski victimized her "in the worst possible way" at his Paris apartment in the 1980s.

It's unclear whether Allen was aware of Lewis' allegations when he affirmed his support of Polanski in France.

Polanski pleaded guilty in 1978 to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl named Samantha Geimer. He was taken into custody in September and is currently under house arrest in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Allen's relationship with actress Mia Farrow ended in scandal and New York tabloid headlines in 1992, when she found out he was having an affair with her adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, then 22. Allen married Previn in 1997.

One pedophile sticking up for another...big surprise. Since Woody sees no problem in molesting a child, why should he think Polanski should serve his time? They should both be in prison. But, of course, in this country money speaks louder than Justice.

"Said the one perv to the other"...As far as woody he is no better. If you think he waited for his step daughter to be legal age. He was taking nude pictures of her when she was 17 years old and having sex then. Just because he married her when she was older doesnt make it better. He was also accused by his young daughter too. But then it was probably her word against his. I have always disliked him. As for Roman Polanski. You have not suffered enough. Just because that one young woman didn't want to go through it all again and move on does not mean she has forgiven or gotten over it. Plus as I have always said where there's one there are usually more victims that never came forward.

It didn't matter if Allen knew about the latest charges. Having sex with a 13 year-old is sick enough. Of course when you sleep with your adopted daughter and then marry her, I guess that would run a close second. No wonder he thinks Polanski has suffered enough.
