Dora the Explorer: Arrested for Illegal Immigration?

Dora the Explorer's mug shot isn't pretty. She's got a black eye, a bleeding lip, and is holding a sign listing her crimes. So, what has the little brown-haired cartoon character been arrested for? Illegal border crossing and resisting arrest.

Arizona's controversial new immigration law has recently stirred up a lot of attention and outcry around the country. And in an effort to really drive their point home, campaigners against the law are using a doctored image of Dora the Explorer as a symbol of their cause. They are using it, and other similarly doctored pictures, to question the character's immigration status and country of origin, the Associated Press reports.

Taking it a step further, several websites including The Huffington Post, have even posted faux articles narrating Dora's capture and arrest. Another photo making the rounds on Facebook features the character catapulting over the fence at the US/Mexico border.

The image was actually created sometime last year by Debbie Groban who designed it for a contest on fake news website FreakingNews.com. Since then, those campaigning against the new Arizona law have been using it.

Nickelodeon is trying its best to avoid fueling the fire by declining to comment on Dora's background. Researchers and the public are trying to find clues to help determine her birthplace or citizenship--from questioning who voices the character (two actresses have; one is Peruvian, the other is Cuban,) to dissecting the fictional location of her show. But no one is confirming or denying anything.

The Latina cartoon character has been a popular and important part of Nickelodeon's programming for almost 10 years. On her show, she teaches young children the alphabet, how to count, colors, and beginner Spanish phrases.

What part of ILLEGAL don't you all understand? If you came home and there were 3 mexicans sitting at your table eating your food, I would hope you would kick them out. I just don't understand Americans that want Illegal Immigration. For what purpose?

I wouldn't worry about what parrot says, he or she is from Canada. At least thats what he or she has said in the past, so either a liar or or outsider (which is it parrot), he or she doesn't matter. The last time I checked they do not have a Latino problem in Canada. In other words, I don't believe a single solitary word of that,
and MAN, do I ever wish Blue's Clues were back on Nickelodeon
with fresh new episodes, even as a Blue's Clues resurrection.
By the way, my favorite show on Nickelodeon, Fairly Oddparents.

How dare you take an adorable children's character and turn her into a political ploy. Usually an adult would get their point across without having to use children. This is nothing more than emotional child abuse. Shame on you. Pick on somebody your own size next time.

people yes we do need imigration laws i agree .....but this is racisim at its finest.by 2040 latinos will be the majority in this country, maybe thats what people are fearing ,maybe then we can do the same to whites and tell them to show citizenship because of the color of their skin. i live in arizone the state where "if you aint white you aint right" huh bunch of bull!

At least Hispanics don't fly right in into CEO positions the same way a certain group of individuals do here in British Columbia, but what will my griping do about it? It seems that Hispanics do nothing but work hard for very little money, whilst bigoted upper crust ironically invade their Puerto Vallartan beaches over Thanksgiving, patronizing locals and being waited on hand and foot. Hatred will never provide a resolution to this, only logic will, and logic states that not every Mexican is a criminal.

No not every mexican is a criminal, but if you are an illegal immigrant than you are a criminal it says it in the title ILLEGAL, call me crazy but if your doing something illegal than you are a criminal. But I will say for me it's not a race thing, I don't think you should be allowed in this country unless you take the legal steps to get there reguardless of race.

These people don't even know their own history and you know who I am talking about. The Spanish invaded first. It was the Spanish that were here the Mexicans were border Indians. They barely survived. Some people called them digger Indians because they were so filthy! Spanish intermarried with some of them creating MEXICAN'S. It wasn't until the white people showed up that they even knew that there was gold here so if you do nothing with what you have you lose it!

My grandparents came from the "old country" (that's what they called it) and into the U.S. through Ellis Island - the legal way. They were poor and my grandfather worked in a coal mine until he was killed in a cavein. They paid taxes and learned english ASAP. While they looked back on their country of origin (Wales) with affection, they loved the U.S. and one of their sons (my dad) went to fight in the Phillipines during WWII. He survived and had 4 children who pay taxes and are college graduates and pay taxes. He would never have considered entering this country illegally and expect the tax payers to pay for his health care etc. What's so radical about expecting mexican citizens to obey our laws if they are here!?

There is nothing wrong with it, that is how it should be. There is no problem with anyone being here as long as they do it the right way. If they are unwilling to follow immigration laws it kind of makes you wonder what other laws they will be breaking
