Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network Charity to Dissolve

As Oprah Winfrey's talk show comes to an end, her charity, The Angel Network, will also be closing its doors, the Huffington Post reports.

Oprah's charity began in 1998 using donations from her talk show viewers. But with the impeding end of the talk show in 2011, it was decided to shut down the charity too, Angel Network spokeswoman Angela DePaul said.

The charity ceased taking donations this week and its website said it plans to dissolve as soon as the remaining funds are distributed. The website also thanked everyone who donated over the years in a statement, "Oprah and the Angel Network's Board of Directors are extremely grateful to the nearly 150,000 donors who have collectively given more than $80 million to our public charity since it began in 1998."

The Angel Network has participated in many projects but is most well known for helping rebuild the Gulf Coast after the Katrina tragedy and building schools in South Africa.

But, this doesn't mark the end of Oprah's philanthropic ways. "Oprah remains deeply committed to philanthropy, and her new cable network--OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network--will continue to highlight charitable organizations in conjunction with its programming in the years ahead," the statement on her website read.

So SHE can't afford to keep the charity going, or even still, keep it afloat after HER OWN NETWORK gets started up? Wow.

I did not read anything about "cannot afford " to kep the charity going? What drug(s) are you on ? It's her money and her charity.......mad because you didn't get anything

Where do you get the idea that it is her money being used? It clearly states that 150,000 donors gave the money to her to distribute. I see her as a self serving Socialist leaning Liberal who would throw her best friend under a bus for the "right" cause, which of course is far left. JMHO

The question of what Ms. Oprah Winfrey wants to do with HER money appears to be Ms. Oprah Winfrey's own damn business. She earned it all legally; and therefore it is her own damn prerogative as to how she spends it. If she decides to buy houses, jewelry, or use it as toilet paper; it's her own damn business. It's not any business of yours, or the author of this article. Period!

Now go mind whatever pennies you have. Give them to charity if you wish; or use them as toilet paper. That's how it works; If you earn the money LEGALLY how you chose to spend it, or give it away is no one's business. Get over your misogynistic, or racial issues. Grow up, and move on.

She's rich as G*d, yet she wants to hold on to her billions and drop the charity? Selfish, selfish selfish. It's ok for her viewers to contribute to the charity, but she is too greedy. I can't stand the woman

The two previous posts are nothing but “haters”. It’s her money/charity to do with as she sees fit. The charity is directly related to the show so it seems to reason if the show does not exist the charity should not either. Now you’re going to feel really stupid when she creates something else with HER MONEY that is even bigger and better. As for the tax shelter, low blow you sound like someone with no money.

I realize it's a charity she began thru her talk show, but the need for what she's used the money is an ongoing situation. There's still work to be done in Katrina-ravaged areas, and schools require funding. What happens to all of them, when she stops sending them money?

New Network = New Charity(ies). Law of Attraction - As long as you give back in one way shape or form you will always receive. I may not have her money, but I am very charitable with my time. I volunteer at places that need help to help the less unfortunate. Why do the haters base everything a person does, on money?

This is yet another example of the hubris displayed by the MEGA RICH. They set up foundations with what is for them chump change -- which they expect their fans to ultimately fund. The MEGA RICH are insulated from the vagaries of the economy... "yeah I lost a few mill..." is hardly on a par with the average Joe taking 20% paycuts or being laid off is it? Meanwhile she has her multi-national investments (tax write-offs), the Cloony's of the world live off-shore to avoid paying US Taxes...but WE THE PEOPLE need to be giving more????? I don't give a good crap about her "charity" but I do care about our local food bank which is scrabbling to keep up with need...ditto all the local charities which are hurting.
