'Shrek' Stomps 'Sex and the City 2' at Box Office

Not only did 'Sex and the City 2' fall far short of box office predictions -- Carrie Bradshaw and the gals got trumped by 'Shrek Forever After,' a week-old film and the fourth in its franchise.

Predictions for 'Sex and the City 2' over the long weekend ran as high as $75 million; however, the film grossed just $37.1 million. The sequel earned less in five days than the 2008 original earned in its first three days.

"It's possible," Moviefone's Gary Susman writes, "that the film was hurt by poor reviews, its R-rating and its 2 1/2-hour running time (allowing for fewer screenings per day) or its inability to attract male moviegoers (polling found the 'Sex 2' audience to be 90 percent female), but none of these proved obstacles for the first movie. Maybe it's just that real-life women the ages of Carrie or Samantha were busy taking their kids to see 'Shrek.'"

'Shrek' also dominated 'Prince of Persia' in what's being deemed the first -- and quite possibly the largest -- box office upset of the summer.

WE WENT TO SEE SEX IN THE CITY AND I THOUGHT IT WAS LOUSY AND A WASTE OF MONEY. 2 OF THEM LOOKED LIKE OLD HAS BEENS. THE CLOTHES WERE CRUMMY, WORST OF ALL IT HAD NO PLOT. I LIKED THE FIRST ONE, BUT I'D NEVER GO TO ANOTHER ONE IF THEY MAKE IT. I COULDN'T BELIEVE THE THEATER WAS JUST ABOUT EMPTY!! IT'S OVER SJP,MOVE ON.

Color me shocked that an actual cartoon would draw more box office than mere 'human' travesties; what I find much more disturbing is that the top five box office performers this week are all retreads. Is there any originality left in Hollywood?

Good that Horseface Carrie and her over the hill gang got stomped by Shrek. Shrek and the Donkey are sexier than any of that Sex and the City bunch anyway. Plus Shrek is far more intelligent, so, no, it isn't hard to see why Shrek would be a more appealing movie.

OMG I thought my husband and I were the only that thought she was ugly and looked a lot like our horse, only thing is my horses look better than she does. I have never ever been a fan of Sex in the City, such a shallow show.

Terrific observation, Vicki. My wife is,,,uh....WAS a big SITS fan, and I grudgingly agreed to go with her over the weekend, but, after that horrible piece of trash we sat through, she, too, thinks it's Loserville. And, all through the movie I thought if I had a bag of carrots I could be feeding them to horse-face Carrie.

Horse face? And this whole time, I thought that was Michael Bolton before he cut his hair. So did SJP ever get that mole cut off her chin? That was hard to look at. And all that smoking she did during the series, just made me think to myself that her expensive hair styles, fashionable clothes and all, smelled like an ashtray. Not sexy!

i am not surprised that shrek beat sex and the city girl because the sex and the city characters got to face that it's time to settle down and hang up thier prada shows because it's getting old now. in the movie carrie is having trouble with big what else is new just dump the guy. charlotte you should have thought the kids situation through before you had kids, miranda ... i don't know what to say and SAMANTHA stop it just stop you are old face it everyone gets old and dies eventually. so again i am not surprised and for the prince of persia it's just another the mummy kind of movie knockoff
