Kristen Stewart Apologizes for 'Enormous Mistake'

Kristen Stewart is taking back comments she made in July's British Elle that equated paparazzi photos of herself to images of women being raped. "I really made an enormous mistake -- clearly and obviously," Stewart tells
PEOPLE exclusively. "And I'm really sorry about my choice of words."
In the issue, she complained about being chased by the paparazzi. "The photos are so ... I feel like I'm looking at someone being raped. A lot of the time I can't handle it," the actress said. "I never expected that this would be my life."
Not long after the interview appeared, Katherine Hull, a spokesperson for Rape and Incest National Network (RAINN), publicly scolded Stewart about her poor choice of words.
"Kristen Stewart's comments are regrettable. Portraying a rape survivor in the film 'Speak' should have led her to use a more appropriate metaphor to describe the intrusive nature of the paparazzi. Rape is more than an intrusion, it's a violent crime, that causes serious long term mental health effects for victims," Hull tells
FOX.
"I've made stupid remarks before, and I've always reasoned: 'Whatever. They can think what they want,'" Stewart says. "'Violated' definitely would have been a better way of expressing the thought."
Stewart has done public service announcements for RAINN and Security on Campus since playing a rape victim in the 2004 film 'Speak.'
"People thinking that I'm insensitive about this subject rips my guts out. I made a big mistake," she adds.

I agree - she is referring to having cameras stuck in your face - you can move ot get away - your stuck, they don't take no for an answer they keep pushing for the photo etc...
So yes it was a poor choice of words - but I don't think she meant the way it was taken
She is still young - she will learn. After seeing her on Oprah - I see that she really is having issues with all the fame - she is going to make mistakes - they all are

My sentiments exactly. I'm sure a lot of the people here judging her have said a lot worse. The only thing that saves them from being critized so severly is that their words aren't published. People seem to forget that celebrities are still people and make mistakes too. She's what 20y/o ? How many of you have never said something stupid at that age?

Rape can also be about violating someone's human rights etc which is what the paps do evryday....take pics without ppl's consent.
Good on Kristen for apologising,I admire her immensely and wish her well for the future.
She's twenty, I cut her some slack - same with the other young hollywood types.

It was a poor choice of words but she realizes that and obviously regrets it and feels badly for using "rape" in such a cavalier manner. As someone who has had to deal with such a horrible thing, I can forgive her. So should everyone else.

You're right; cut her some slack.
Maybe she should have used the word "violated" instead. Her point was about the pain and grief the paparazzi dump on celebs no matter what and at any cost. Not about the physical act of rape.
I guess some people don't understand the process of speaking metaphorically anymore. sigh...
Poor baby! She is getting rich because of her face being in the public eye but she wants to act as if she didn't know this was all part of being a celebrity. Give me a break! I don't even know what the draw is to her. She is a terrible actress. Too much like Jodie Foster. She can only do one persona and that is depressed and long-faced with a mono-tone voice.

Wow, people really need to get over how sensitive they are. That was a figure of speech and people are making her feel bad over it. All the sensitive people out there that are making a big deal of this should feel bad for making her feel bad about a harmless discription. That was her way of describing how she felt. Sensitive people: you need to grow up and realize you are in the real world now, get over your crap, keep your drama to yourself, and move on.

Kristen knows she slipped, and is sorry for it. Thats enough for me. Some people go through life, and talk to hurt others on purpose. Kristen is not one of those people. Shes a good girl, and wouldnt hurt anyone on purpose.
