Christie Brinkley Tells Daughter Alexa Ray Joel to Seek Professional Help

Christie Brinkley dished out a lot of tough love after her daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, overdosed on pills and was hospitalized in December. "Your job as a parent is to listen. And to dole out as much love as you can," the supermodel tells Ladies' Home Journal in its July issue. "That includes tough love."

In early December, Joel had been dealing with the end of a long-term relationship with former bandmate Jimmy Riot. She swallowed a handful of pills, but quickly called 911 to get checked out by doctors. She was then taken to St. Vincent's hospital in Manhattan and returned home a few days later.

"She tried to do something dramatic to prove to her boyfriend how much he hurt her," Brinkley says. "I think many people can relate to that excruciating pain of love gone wrong. I'd rather have a broken arm than a broken heart."

"I told Alexa, 'You got yourself worked into such a tizzy. You need to examine that, you need to seek professional advice,'" Brinkley admits.

The 24-year-old musician, Brinkley's daughter with music legend Billy Joel, told the dispatcher that she was having trouble breathing and was then taken to St. Vincent's.

Alexa Ray opened up about her depression in January, admitting she swallowed a handful of homeopathic pills. She posted notes on Facebook to thank her friends, fans and supporters, adding she wants "to help young girls with something I feel I know a GREAT deal about: Heartbreak-Related Depression. Although it does not get much attention in our society, it is a very serious and painful condition that often gets 'swept under the carpet.' I hope to bring this topic to light."

"I just wanted to thank you all for the incredible outpouring of love and support," she wrote. "It's certainly been a whirlwind of a month, but reading all of your encouraging posts has never failed to cheer me up!" she explained on Facebook.

Like her boyfriend would even give a damn if she swallowed the whole bottle. I guess women really don't get what it means to get dumped. If your ex doesn't want to see you anymore, pull up your pantyhose and move on. If your ex is a band member, then he's already been screwing a dozen screaming women fans already. You'll never get him back providing you actually had him in the first place. It's over. Done. Goodbye.

Christie Brinkley is trying to save her daughter from disaster, but she hasn't exactly been a paragon of good & responsible behavior. Brinkley seems to have been wrapped up in herself with little regard for husbandS or her child. I still smile at the story of how her last hubby dunked Alexa's head in a bucket of water. Mouthy kids need a wakeup call.

Nobody is perfect and Kate certainly has her faults but she is trying to make the best of her situation. Her children are being well cared for and if nothing else they have each other.

To be honest, this was nothing more than a cry for help. Who takes pills and then IMMEDIATELY calls 911? The kid is unstable but probably due to lack of parental guidance, her mother has spent her life being too pro-occupied trying to find husband after husband, relationship after relationship. Perhaps if Christie spent more quality time being a mom and less on herself, this wouldn't have happened.

I don't understand all the negativity?!? I think it takes a lot of courage for Christie and Alexa Ray to speak out about this. And, if memory serves, it wasn't Christie who led such an irresponsible, scandal-filled life...that was her loser, porn-addicted, 18-year-old girlfriend having ex-husband.

As painful as break-ups are, no man is worth taking your life over. There are plenty more fish in the sea and why would you want someone who doesn't want you? Take time to re-group, make a fresh start and love yourself. Always be good to you first.

Looks like Christie is not a good wife or a good mom. Even making these statements makes it not about her daughter but more about her. I would think the daughter would want privacy on these matters not announcing it in the press! I think Christie is just trying to protect HER reputation and not her daughters!

Her daughter is not a child, she has lived a privileged life. What would she do if she had to live in the real world. If she requires a doctor, then she should see one, God knows that family has the money. So tired of hearing about the hard life of the privileged!
