Nothing says summer like a lot of songs you love all mashed up together. That's why mash-up master DJ Earworm's 'Like, OMG Baby (Capital FM Summertime Ball Mashup)' is already going viral, just days after hitting the Interwebs. The mash-up was commissioned by British Radio station Capital FM, so this remix has a different flavor than the year-end 'United State of Pop' compilations that Earworm has become known for.
We took a few minutes to chat with Earworm, whose real name is Jordan Roseman, 40, about this latest mash, why he dreads/loves including Bieber in a remix and what the hell Earworm means.
What inspired the 'Like, OMG Baby' summer mash-up?
This one was commissioned, so it was less inspired. I did it for Capital FM in London for their annual concert, the Summertime Ball. The 15 artists in the video performed at the concert. Five Americans and ten from over there. They played the video at the show and then later they posted it online.
Did you get to go to the show?
No. Unfortunately, I had a conflict, but my manager Rodney went and he said it was great.
Were these the songs you personally would have included in a summer mash-up if someone with a big wallet weren't giving out the instructions?
Traditionally, because I am from America, I focus on the American pop charts. I wasn't that familiar with the British artists, so it definitely skewed things in different ways.
Is there anyone that you can call out now that will make the 'United State of Pop' mash-up at year's end? Will there definitely be a Bieber tune?
I don't think definitely. His song only got to number five on the charts, but because of its sustained popularity he might get there. If he ends up in the end of the year remix, I will try to use him in a different way. For the summer one, I wanted to play with the perception of Justin Bieber, since he is so loved by many and hated by many. So I said to myself, "Why don't I make this all about 'Baby,'" and then only let him come in at the end. It's almost a prank. I was looking at the comments on YouTube, and there were a lot of upset people.
What are you working on next?
I have another mash-up coming up. Soon. I don't want to say when, though, because I always think they'll be ready sooner than they are.
How long does one mash-up take?
A month or so of hard work doing the audio and video. It takes some time.
If you were going to do a personal mash-up would it be the poppy stuff that gets so much viral love?
The truth is that all the mash-ups I did until recently were personal. Only in 2007 did I start doing the charts and then I started getting more and more commissioned stuff. I don't really listen to pop music except for remixing it. I am a little more alternative. I love the Beatles and Michael Jackson. I would love to make a mash-up of them. But we will see.
Earworm? It sounds gross.
It comes from the German "ohrwurm" -- for a melody that gets stuck in your head and you can't get it out no matter how hard you try. I thought it was a worthy goal and took it on as a moniker.
