Jay-Z Talks Beyonce in New Rolling Stone

Jay-Z is typically a tough nut to crack when it comes to his wife, Beyonce, but he's finally opening up a bit in Rolling Stone's new cover story.

"Sometimes on creative stuff, one of us will ask, 'Do you think this is cool?'" Jay-Z, 40, says of his wife of two years, 28. "She's a magnificent A&R, if she ever decides to do that, for things like pitch. So I defer to her on those sort of questions."

PEOPLE notes Jay-Z "raves" about Beyonce's stellar performance in Lady Gaga's 'Telephone' music video, but the participation was her own choice. "[We] pretty much stay out of each other's business," the hip-hop mogul says.

In the profile, Jay-Z recounts a Laurie Simmons photograph he purchased, a "noirishly lit pistol with a pair of women's legs emerging from the handle," getting rejected by "B," his nickname for Beyonce. "It was more of a masculine style, I guess," Jay-Z says. Beyonce opted for a similar piece of artwork for their 8,000-square-foot NYC penthouse, depicting a perfume bottle rather than a gun.

Music's biggest couple was spotted at one of indie music's biggest mainstays, Coachella, last year. Jay-Z speaks of his love for the genre: "I love the energy coming out indie rock right now. It has this rebellion thing that hip-hop is missing now, the thing that made hip-hop hip-hop."

Lyor Cohen, Warner Music Group vice chairman and an old pal of Jay-Z's, recalled a moment from Coachella where he crossed paths with the couple. "[Jay-Z] was driving the other way, and Beyonce rolled her window down. They're beaming from ear to ear ... I said, 'Where you guys going?'" Cohen remembers. "Jay said, 'Lyor, either jump in, or I'll check you out later -- we can't miss the show we're running to now!' They were so excited by the other artists."

In March, the couple faced erroneous pregnancy rumors.

Look at that body language. He doesn't care whether she's there at all, and she seems to want to dissasociate from him -- she's posing away from him. I really feel it's a business deal much more than a marriage. I'm sure they're great friends, but she leans away and he sits there like a rock, so it's clear that she's not the dominant one here.
