Will Ferrell's 'Elf' Will Become a Broadway Musical

Twenty-first century holiday classic 'Elf' will launch a holiday Broadway run this November, the New York Times reports.

Writer Thomas Meehan told the Times 'Elf the Musical' is in "very good shape, very fun shape." The production will set up at the Al Hirschfeld Theater and run through New Year's Day.

"It's hard to imagine a more ideal show to run over the holidays," said Meehan, who has won Tony Awards for his work on 'Hairspray,' 'Annie' and 'The Producers.' Interestingly, the music will come from Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin, who worked together on a 2006 musical adaptation of Adam Sandler's film 'The Wedding Singer.'

The show is not yet officially confirmed, but the Times obtained anonymous details. Actor Christian Anderson, of 'Avenue Q' and the Broadway adaptation of 'High Fidelity,' has read for Will Farrell's character, Buddy, a towering human raised in an elf world. "But Mr. Meehan and the two theater executives said they were not sure who would play that lead role at the Hirschfeld," the Times writes.

'Hairspray' is the current production at the Hirschfeld Theater. It will wrap on June 27.

It's not about race. Jaden is the cutest, has the most presence, and the most future star power.... BUT he's a little kid, and so he's the least likely to win in a karate match. (Duh.)
