One week ago today, PopEater kicked off our official 'Nominate Zach Gilford for an Emmy' campaign after his epic 'Friday Night Lights' performance in 'The Son.' Countless media outlets (including EW, Parade, Sports Illustrated and others) as well as celebrities (Diablo Cody, Elizabeth Banks) echoed our sentiments, and thousands of 'FNL' fans have signed up to draw attention to Zach's masterful portrayal. Now, Variety has tapped Zach as one to watch as the Emmys approach (he'd be eligible for Outstanding Guest Actor), saying: "The emotion etched into Matt Saracen's face, conveying the repressed anger he holds for his dad, reminded us why Gilford was so brilliant on the first three seasons of the show." We couldn't agree more, and hope to only further Zach's chances of a nomination with our campaign. If you haven't yet, join our Facebook push, and to see the brilliant performance that started it all, check out Gilford in 'The Son' after the jump ... and get the tissues ready.

I think fnl is a superb program too often overlooked by the emmy's.
For once this guy should be nominated as should the main characters in this show.
I love it and never miss it. Each show is unique unto itself.

The best thing about this show, making it deserving of an EMMY, besides the excellent acting, writing, directing, editing, and the rest, is the movie-like cinematography. Even on our older (big fat tube) TV, it looks stunning. The bigger TV we now have makes you feel like you are at the movie theatre. I love when street lamps, raindrops, background-y stuff has a supporting role in a film. "I'll Fly Away" had that same quality. If you've never seen that series, you owe it to yourself to get it and watch it from start to finish. (kinda, anyway; it was cancelled and they were forced to do a hurry-up "finale" that was supposed to tie up all the loose ends.) I'll Fly Away should be required watching for every 9th grader in the US.
I hope FNL gets the awards it has earned with this show, one of the best on television these days.
And YES! Zach Gilford most certainly deserves an EMMY for his portrayal in this episode.
(I must say I am confused by the "Guest" designation, however; he's been on the show from day one!
I sat there and watched the episode in full (thought it would be just a clip), and whoever said "get out your kleenex" was right! I'm glad I watched the whole thing. Even on this dinky laptop screen, it looks beautiful, and pulls you in to their world. It's so real.
I agree. I love his portrayal of Matt Saracen. I'm 46 and this is one of my favorite shows. I also love coach Taylor!

Ah yes Coach Taylor...the guy who catches his 16 year old in bed with her boyfriend then lets her have a sleep over that very night...
I too am 46 and this is my favorite show. Love his character, great actor and was a fan since episode one with Street character injury. OK, I'll stop now, obsessed! Plus, why has the show never been nominated?

This is hands down the greatest show on Television! And has been since the onset. There has been brilliant acting/storlines/direction and a reality to it that so many other shows should aspire to. For NBC to not put this in a better time slot and extend it past next season is an absolute crime! I think every episode of every season evokes tears from me - some of happiness, some of sadness, but all a true feeling.
The episode of "The Son" brought to life a feeling that many across America have experienced recently and Zach Gilford's portrayal of these emotions not only showed the real human experience in a time like this, it was a beautiful tribute to the men and women who serve and sacrifice for us all every day. Thank you to the writers for that episode, and thank you to Zach for doing such an amazing job of making us all truly feel what these families go through in these times of loss. He MORE than deserves a nomination, he deserves the EMMY, without a doubt!

EW? AOL? SI? ...Time Warner humping their own stuff like only they can.... Why is a sports mag talking bout tv emmys?.....What next...90210 for best drama emmy?
Reply
Maybe SI is talking about it because the show features football? And did you just equate FNL with 90210? Oh, the shame.
Ive been following the show since 2006. It's about time for the most decent show on tv to get recognized. Zach is amazing along with all the other actors.
clear eyes full hearts cant lose :)

I haven't following the show (it's been on my list to see for a long time though). In fact, the episode embedded above was the first full episode I've seen. Normally I don't have emotional reactions to anything on tv, but that kid had me in tears. He and Jesse Pinkman are the only characters I feel like hugging through my tv set. He deserves the nomination at least.

I just started watching FNL this season, and now catching up on past seasons via Netflix. The word addiction does not even describe the draw of this show. I was on an elliptical machine watching "The Son" and unfortunately kicked up some exercise induced asthma because of the crazy crying I was doing. I tried to tell my husband what happened, and ended up crying again. I enjoy Zach Gilford's acting immensely. Other pages are harsh on him, but I find him nothing but realistic. He only deserves all the kudos he will hopefully receive!

After so many years of consistent quality, why should we expect the Emmy's to recognize this show now?
Zach Gilford's performance in "The Son" was the single most searing piece of acting I've seen on TV this year, including some fantastic acting on shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Pacific, Justified, Glee and Treme.
Based on past indifferences, my expectations that Emmy voters would even watch the episode much less vote the show in are pretty slim. Be nice if they would, but this show never needed outside recognition or popularity to continue its excellence...

He can only be a "guest actor" because he only appears in 5 episodes this season. Personally, this show has been overlooked since it graced my TV. The show needs a nomination and I would be happy if Kyle Chandler and/or Connie Britton got a nomination as well. This is on show that has great writing, and as a mom of 3 boys under the age of 14, I have no problem with letting my kids watch this show. LOVE FNL!!!!

I have loved Kyle Chandler since Homefront.....which was a GREAT show. I hope he gets the recognition he deserves soon! He is one of the most handsome men out there.

WHY DON'T THEY JUST CANCEL THE EMMYS AND HAVE A "FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS AWARDS SHOW. EVERYONE ON THIS THING IS THE BEST ACTING I HAVE EVER EVER SEEN. FROM GOOD 'OL BUDDY TO RIGGIN'S AWFUL NEW PG SISTER-IN-LAW. NOMINATE EVERYONE AND CLOSE DOWN THE VOTING. LET IT REIGN FOREVER.
