Readers Speak: 'Twilight' and 'True Blood' Fans Who Tried the Other Series
By The Pop Chorus Posted Jun 18th 2010 02:10PM
With 'True Blood' kicking off its third season and 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' hitting theaters in less than two weeks, we think it's safe to say, it's vampire time. (Unless it's always vampire time these days. Then, um ... we dunno.) Doing our best to avoid a bloodbath between fans, we listened to our loyal Pop Chorus, full of Twi-hards and Truebies who tried one series based on their love for the other. Some found one saga too chaste, the other too violent, and some were pulled in by their new fix and never looked back. Read on for testimonies from our readers!
Alexandra Erwin: "I loved 'Twilight,' but became a Truebie"
I was a 'Twilight' fan, mesmerized by Edward, loving the chemistry between Bella and her vampire honey. I liked how things melted together in the saga and how the books and films concentrated on the three characters I really wanted to know more about -- Jacob, Bella, Edward.
Then I was introduced to 'True Blood.' I was sucked in by how gritty and dirty it was. Before I knew it, I needed to watch more. I love the dark drama; it always keeps me guessing. The suspenseful soundtrack adds to the atmosphere, keeping me on the edge of my seat. Then there are the sex scenes, which are everyone's fantasies put on television. I tried watching 'Twilight' again and found it slow compared to the high action and intense drama 'True Blood' offers. I'm truly a fan turned to the darker side of things.
Holly Wilson: "I tried 'True Blood,' but I'm a Twi-hard for life"
I love 'Twilight.' Love the forbidden love story and the romantic yet protective gestures Edward makes for Bella. It's the perfect love story with the perfect amount of vampire mixed in. I've seen the first movie over 30 times, 'New Moon' close to 20 and have read the books at least five times. I can't get enough. So when a friend brought up 'True Blood,' I thought I'd give it a try. Hey, it's about vampires, after all. I love 'em, so I was sure I'd enjoy 'True Blood.' Not the case. The HBO series is too gory for me!
'True Blood' doesn't center on the relationship between immortals and humans enough for my liking, although it does come closer to following the sacred vampire rules -- no vamps out during the day, no entering houses without being invited and the ol' wooden stake and silver hazards. So while 'True Blood' is more believable, 'Twilight' lets you dig a little deeper into a fantasy world. 'True Blood' revolves around numerous characters and their issues; I need the focus to be on one core couple you can root for and fall in love with, 'Twilight'-style. Yes, the adventures of Sookie and co. are edgier and scarier than Bella's and better suited to an older audience, but 'Twilight' is good for all ages, and there's just more love and passion.
Benjamin Williams: "I love 'True Blood' and couldn't stomach 'Twilight'"
I've been a fan of 'True Blood' since the first frame rolled -- the way the writers and cast blend fiction with reality has always been a major selling point for me. My girlfriend, however, is a huge 'Twilight' fan. Anything and everything to do with Stephenie Meyer's franchise is a topic of conversation in our home. When my lover insisted I turn off 'True Blood' one night and watch the first 'Twilight' movie, I kept an open mind and watched diligently ... for the first 30 minutes. I wanted to see something that would turn me into a fan and, well, it never came.
'Twilight' forces me to follow the story from a very limited viewpoint. All the characters are focused on one of two things -- love/heartbreak or action sequences. With 'True Blood,' I'm given a diverse cast, each with their own story and motives, which keeps things interesting and suspenseful. It goes without saying that Twi-hards have a genre-defining epic on their hands, but Truebies simply have a more memorable time tuning in to an unstoppable series each week.
