Kellie Pickler Engaged to Songwriter Kyle Jacobs

Kellie Pickler is getting married!

The former 'American Idol' contestant, who now makes her rounds on the country music stage, will wed her boyfriend, songwriter Kyle Jacobs, PEOPLE reports.

Jacobs proposed on June 15 -- which is normally a "sad and hard" day for Pickler because it was her late grandmother's birthday. But the question changed everything.

"It turned out to be the most amazing day of my life. My whole world changed. We both feel like we got my grandmother's blessing," she tells PEOPLE.

"I remember saying to Kyle, 'Baby it's like I'm dreaming – but if this isn't real, I'm going to be very upset!'" she says of the proposal.

The 23-year-old singer met Jacobs through a friend two-and-a-half years ago.

"I'm in the happiest place I've ever been," Pickler gushes.

This girl is a winner. I hope she has a long and lasting marriage. I mean seems she can't lose. I saw her on "Are you Smarter than a 5th grader." She's not by the way if that show is any indication. She was dumb as dirt on that show and she still won a pile of money. Ain't life strange?

Oh man! What is all the hoopla about? Life is too short for this kind of bickering. I think she is a sweetie. I wish her the best in her new life. But I do hope also that she will make amends with her mother. She cannot in her mind ever know and imagine what her mother must have endured.

I just love Kellie Pickler. Ever since she made her audition on American Idol I have followed her career. She is just adorable! I wish I was her mother. I would be so so proud. I'm a 60 yr old grandma and the first cd I ever played in my car is Red High Heels. I just love it! In fact it's the only cd I ever listen to. Love her music. Funny thing is that I was never interested in Country until I heard Kellie sing. You are awesome and I wish you the very very best in life. Your kids are going to be so cute!

Kyle seems like a nice, down-to-earth young man with a good head on his shoulders.

She's clearly marrying for love and not fame, and that's smart.
