Pop-ed: Fans of 'True Blood' were told that this season of the HBO hit about vampires and werewolves would include some of the most twisted scenes on TV, but did last night's episode -- particularly its closing moments -- go too far?
After the credits rolled, I filed my review for TV Squad, attempted to regain my sense of what's right and wrong in the world, posted a note on my Facebook page and trolled the Internet to see what other people were saying.
Haven't seen last night's episode yet? Beware: major spoilers ahead!
Yes, I'm talking about that final, shocking, head-spinning scene -- where good-guy vampire Bill Compton turned very bad when he threw his ex, Lorena, on the bed and attacked her, twisting her head around so that she was staring the other way, blood oozing out of her mouth as Bill had his way with her.
I'm not sure it could be classified as rape because she is the one who wanted it, and she even managed to spew out "I love you" during the act. Plus, they're both vampires, and judging by the earlier sex scene between Tara and Franklin, vamp sex is pretty intense to begin with.
Even Lorena herself, actress Mariana Klaveno, said it was the most shocking thing she'd ever read in a television script. "My jaw dropped on the floor when I read it and thought, 'Oh my god, I actually have to do that?'" she said in an interview with E! Online.
"[They said] 'Here's your script, pray that your parents will be okay when they watch this episode. They may not want to.' It was a little uncomfortable, but we got through it."
Over on our Facebook page, the comments are varied, with "freaky," "shocking" and "gross" used to describe the scene. Some felt it was OK because it's on HBO, and 'True Blood' has a tradition of pushing the envelope on blood, sex and gore.
A Little Less Kinky: Lorena Turns Bill Flashback
But one viewer may be re-thinking her 'True Blood' habit, noting that Stephen Moyer, who plays Bill, is calling the scene "a watercooler moment for the next 20 years." "This might cross the line for me and I haven't felt this way since the rape scene in 'The Hills Have Eyes' remake a few years back," wrote Nicolette Black.
"I am sorry, but rape is not entertainment and should not be showed in such a light manner," she added. "I think I may be dropping 'True Blood' from my viewing. I was going to give it one more season because I really did not like last season's storyline, but I think they finally crossed my line. I want more story, sex and violence gets boring after awhile."
The Twitterverse is buzzing, as well:
What do you think? Did 'True Blood' cross the line with Bill and Lorena's twisted sex scene? Or is it just another night on HBO? Tell us on Facebook >>>
Yeah, I guess today's voyeurs, excuse me, viewers are so jaded, blaise and so porn addicted about sex, violence and rape, that all the writers just keep having to get more sex, more violence and more rape. Ho hum! Too bad we can't have any shows that RESPECT WOMEN!!!! Gee, THAT would be something different for a change!
Sooo...should he have politely asked if he could have his way with her? Pfft it's True Blood! Give me a break. If you don't like it don't watch, stop your whining. Geez!
TB is the most respectful program toward women on TV... in that it doesn't coddle them or put them on a pedestal. it's the most socially enlightened show on right now. be smarter ! don't speak out of ignorance....
I was confused because they showed Bill humping her, and then we clearly saw a shot with his pants still on during the scene. The scene was really cool in my opinion, but should have been done better.
I'm happy because now that Bill has cheated on Sookie, she can finally go all of the way with Eric :)
I thought the same thing but this is television and people are able to have sex with their clothes on for some reason (I often see some sex scene on tv and think to myself "that wouldn't work, you could never achieve penetration from that angle"). I wonder also how does a vampire get an erection? Erection are caused by blood flowing into the penis and since vampires are dead...? Maybe I am thinking too much.
well he is a vampire, "it" is probably super charged, so it popped right through~no need for zipper issues. LMAO!!! oh brother. All this stuff is making me coocoo. haha
That was most definitely not disgusting, it irritates me that people would say so. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Most people that watch the show are looking forward to seeing these sorts of things.
No, not actual rape - but "rape-ish" yes!! Being on HBO has nothing to do with it!!! Vampire Sex - is totally on the wild side, but the whold twisting the head around - still "bangin' her?! Kinda Gross!!!!!?????
Didn't Lorena demand he have sex with her? And as his maker, isn't he powerless to resist her, so she could have demanded he stop if she wanted? And since he is powerless to resist her demands, did she rape him by demanding he have sex with her?
omg please do not try to ruin my fav. show for me, it's just a tv show and i seriously doubt you can claim rape when she's laying there going yes bill make love to me and i love you
Shows like this ruin the act of sex; no wonder women get raped. Plus, young teens see this and think this is what sex supposed to be like.......True Blood? True Garbage..............
first of all you haven't seen it and as far as I'm concern parents need to raise their kids themselves, trust me many of them don't even know how to raise a child...the show the scene was Lorena's fault she is trying to control him....
women get raped because of T.V. ? say that to the men in your life. see how they react... as though they have no control over their own impulses ?...you're a dope ! get informed. be smarter...
young teens shouldn't be watching it. This is mature vamp show. And rape is caused by the individual not by a show. if I saw this as a teen, I would know better because i would have been raised right to think differently. This would not have made me act in this manner. how ignorant some ppl are.
....all this vampire stuff is totally stupid and ignorant fantasy...seriously are people still watching vampire and werewolf stuff....when I saw 5 minutes of this horse slop it made me wonder how crappy a writer can be to do his/her job...this crap just that isn;t hard to write...and those of you that watch it/love it are just folks who don;t expect very much, from anything I imagine
I hate vamp/werewolf sh**. but, TB is a brilliant lesson in sociology. a much needed one for people in this day and age. the vampire/supernatural stuff is a tool to attract a certain demographic, who usually wouldn't watch something so socially intelligent. the depth of the show must've gone over ur head....too bad.
I was totally shocked by that moment last night, but it definitely was not rape of Lorena. I would hope parents would not condone young teens watching this series, and if they do...shouldn't the parents be blamed and not the series???
I already know a lot of people are going to hate me for this...but honestly...True Blood is by far one the dumbest show on T.V. today. The story is just stupid and the acting makes me want to bust out in laughter. I tried to give this show a run and I have watched about four episodes and I slimply can't stomach anymore.
But hey...to you True Blood fans, um, enjoy I guess.

Tiffany, when you read further than book one you´ll know how the show differs from the book series...
