Angelina Jolie on Loving Brad Pitt, Cutting Herself as a Kid, and How She Avoids the Paparazzi

'Salt' star Angelina Jolie opens up in a new candid interview with Parade in which she discusses her life with Brad Pitt, their house full of kids, and how she deals with the daily media circus surrounding her.

The gorgeous movie star also discusses some of rebellious past including cutting herself and jumping out of airplanes and the death of her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who died in 2007 of ovarian cancer.

Excerpts from the interview after the jump.

On love:
"I feel sad for someone who has never known love. Love elevates. You know, Brad would joke about me having this conversation about love. Love? It's such a funny word. Brad can find certain phrases of poetry for it. I'm terrible at it. But I know it means wanting the best for the people you love, putting their interests above your own, always. Love does that. Love is what you live for."

On her past:
"I used to cut myself or jump out of airplanes, trying to find something new to push up against because sometimes everything else felt too easy. I was searching for something deeper, something more. I tried everything. I always felt caged, closed in, like I was punching at things that weren't there. I always had too much energy for the room I was in."

On the paparazzi:
"We do everything we can to keep our kids away from it. We travel to places where the kids aren't aware of that kind of thing. We try to give them a full life where they don't have to come face to face with that world. With the paparazzi present, we're careful when we leave the house. Other than that..." She laughs at the absurdity of it all. "We don't stand in the checkout line at the grocery store looking at the magazines. Our friends don't tell us about it. And our kids don't know. I feel if we keep looking out for them, they'll be fine."

On her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand:
"Mother never put herself first, ever. At the end, she said her greatest success was being a mother. I remember Mother singing in church. How pretty she was! I lit candles with her. She said she had missed nothing in life except getting to know her grandchildren. When she passed away, I brought my son to church to light a candle for her." Jolie's eyes fill with tears. "Forgive me," she says. "I loved her so much."

The fact that Angelina has to continually say she and Brad are in love shows they are not. Everytime this nut job makes a movie we have to read about her lies and fake life. What a joke.

They only reason a person cuts themselves is from some type of childhood sexual abuse.

You're an idiot. Childhood sexual abuse is NOT the only reason cutters cut. Educate yourself before you try educating others!

Uh...NO... Young teens cut themselves for so many other reasons, and NOT solely due to sexual abuse.

My problem with AJ is that her and Pitt have the need to say relevant and neither will concede their celerity to raise six very young children. If both AJ and Pitt continue this way, one of their children might end up cutting themselves when they are teenagers.

That's not true. I'm still young and I've done that too, but I was not sexually abused in any way. Some teens go through more than others with their family and personal life issues. She probably went through a state of depression. Leave her alone.

amazing that everytime one of these two, either Pitt or Jolie make a movie, they are suddenly ready to talk to the media and get their faces on the cover of a magazine. any other time they say nothing at all. doesnt make a difference all their movies suck anyway. the only oscar jolie ever won was for girl interruped when she played a clone of herself. Ms. Jolie is such a liar. If you love your Mom, who had Ovarian Cancer, you should be by her side, quit everything, to be by her side (her mom hospital bed side)... I did for my parents and I don't make a ton of money like her but I knew I would not able to forgive myself for not able to spend some of the last breath of my mom on earth, my mom last days on earth... instead Ms. Jolie decided to travel around the world with Mr. Pitt -to chase his pant and the little Pitt man!!! I so understand the word "love" she is painting in this article. She loves herself than her Mom... She loves publicity than a true love for her own Mom who raised her as a single parents... Jerk...

You don't know what went on with with Jolie and her mother. you really don't know how much time she was at her mother side. You are just a bitter Aniston person sent to bash Jolie every chance you can.
How every what you are saying about true love reminds me of Jennifer Aniston not being by her husband side. If Jennifer truly loved her husband she would have been a better wife instead of acting like she did not care for him causing a divorce and you would not be all over the Internet trying to bash Pitt and Jolie.
I love my husband I'm at his side that's why we are still married--Bottom line I don't know what went on in Pitt and Aniston's marriage just like you don't know what went on with Jolie and her mother. Who in the world are you to measure how much Jolie loved her mother. We all heard about the problems Aniston had with her mother-not helping her mom during her medical crisis. Once heard Jen lets her mom live in poverty. Guess that shows Jen don't love her mom.
