Mel Gibson's Long, Hateful History

Mel Gibson has had more comebacks than Jesus.

While the critics are probably right in saying he's going to have a hard time restoring the public's affection after his most recent tirade -- RadarOnline.com's shocking recordings of verbal and implied physical abuse against his girlfriend -- he's been in similar situations before, many times.

A look at his public record isn't pretty.

As websites such as Gawker.com have pointed out, his trail of ugly rhetoric stretches back to 1991, when he angered the gay community with remarks made to the Spanish newspaper El Pais and reported in the US by columnist Liz Smith.

"They take it up the a**; this is only for taking a s***," he told the newspaper. "With this look, who's going to think I'm gay? I don't lend myself to that type of confusion. Do I look like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them?"

When asked about the comments by Good Morning America, he replied: "I don't think there's an apology necessary, and I'm certainly not giving one. [Those remarks were a response] to a direct question. If someone wants my opinion, I'll give it. What, am I supposed to lie to them?"

When asked about the incident again by Playboy in 1995, he responded: "I'll apologize when hell freezes over. They can f*** off." (He later agreed to peace talks with the gay group GLAAD, brokered by its then-media director, Chaz Bono.)

After that, Mel stayed quiet until his infamous 2006 DUI bust in Malibu. At that time, he was moved to observe to the officer who pulled him over: "F***ing Jews ... the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world ... are you a Jew?"

At this point, you might think that show business is an odd career choice for someone who doesn't like Jews or homosexuals. But as TMZ reported shortly afterward, he also found time to insult women, remarking to a female officer on the scene: "What do you think you're looking at, sugar tits?"

Mel laid low after that debacle, but was buoyed by the positive reaction to his 2006 film 'Apocalypto.' Entering rehab for alcohol and his image as a deeply-religious family man also helped cushion the blow.

But that family image took a fatal blow when he divorced the mother of his seven children in 2009 and took up with Oksana Grigorieva, with whom he had a baby (out of wedlock) later that year. By April of 2010, that relationship had ended.

It was that ugly breakup which seems to have prompted Mel's worst tirade of all, in which he goes out of his way to use unconnected racial slurs to insult his Russian ex, in a phone call obtained by RadarOnline.com.

"You look like a f***ing pig in heat, and if you get raped by a pack of n*****s, it will be your fault," he says on one recording. Speaking separately about a female employee, he says: "I will report her to the f****ng people that take f***ing money from the wetbacks."

About her appearance, he says: "Look what you are ... look what every part of you is ... f***ing fake ... you are the most synthetic person ... who the f*** are you?"

In perhaps the most shocking portion of the tape, Grigorieva demands to know "what kind of man" would hit a woman in the face, while she was holding their baby. His response was: "You know what? You f***ing deserved it."

Gibson himself thinks he's indestructible, telling the London Telegraph (about his earlier troubles, before the Grigorieva tapes were made public): "I am one tough m*****f****r and you can't bother me anymore. You ask anybody what their number one fear is and it's public humiliation. Multiply that on a global scale and that's what I've been through. It changes you and makes you one tough m*****f*****. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

But after almost 20 years of practice, it seems that Mel may finally have launched the tirade that ends his career.

It has not survived and it should not. His poisonous, vicious and bigoted drunken mouth has all but killed his career, as it should. Mel Gibson deserves no ones sympathy.

He has tried to build his own world so as not to need others even building his own church. He has enough money to produce his films, but I think it is not working for him. This is how alcohol fools people into thinking they can stand on their own. It really is a sad situation when you really break it down.

Please get him some treatment There seems to be Huntinton's Disease to me No one normal acts this way or even thinks like he does lately creeps us out who loved his work . Hey Robert Downey can you get him to some help?

No one brings Mel down. He does it all by himself. And, to say, that she set him up? Who set him up all the other countless moments in his ever present racial tirades? His supporters, obviously, are his racial rant believers! Pathetic! Mel, go away. Do society a favor!

So is the writer saying that men SHOULD take it up the bunghole? The anti-Jewish remarks are way off, but if the writer thinks that even dogs and wolves drive out and kill punk curs because they were brainwashed by some belief they're rather off. It's nature, and preservation of the species. If you treat a dirt track like a tunnel of love, may you eat shee-at and die.

Mel used to have great hair and a tight butt. He has neither now. What does he think when he looks in the mirror and sees that bald headed geezer? He lies about everything including his age. Seriously 54? Try 64...

"Jess" are you kidding? He hates everybody and thinks he is perfect. This article has left out tons of other vile outbursts he has had. Forget wondering why the media wants to bring him down. Why should the public want to elevate him? Because he has beautiful eyes? Because he used to have a nice body? His personality stinks to high heaven. There are plenty of individuals who deserve our admiration. His girlfriend wasn't around when he drove drunk. She wasn't around when he insulted everyone at the scene. Do you honestly think she was taping him from the beginning???? No! I am sure she went through plenty before she finally decided she'd have to tape it for anyone to believe it. His movies have been great, but I don't watch them anymore, and I never will. There are plenty of other ones out there. For Pete's sake....have some standards, woman!

Ah another crucifiction with only half the truth, but the gutter press only want sensationalism. Next week after a few legals are in place the truth will begin to surface about what a disgusting ghold digging skank this peice of crap woman really is. She will end up with contempt charges and the DA will find out what a liar she is, the child abuse charges will be dropped and in a few months nobody will care any more. Her life will be ruined and Mel will continue being the brilliant actor and director he is. The J people that run hollywood seem to have conveniently forgotton about forgiveness so how rightous are they. And what has a private conversation between two people got to do with anybody. What was her motive in goading him on and then taping a conversation. MONEY MONEY MONEY. She did the same thing to Timothy Dalton as well. She is just a filthy skank who should go to jail for contempt of court and attempted extortion

I am half black and Hispanic. I dont give a crap what Mel Gibson thinks about me. With all his money and talent I feel I am way better than him just because I love all people. Life is too short to go around hating one another. All I can do is pray for him. I feel sorry for him.
