New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died Tuesday of a heart attack at his Tampa home. In his decades running one of the world's most renowned teams (his Bronx Bombers notched seven World Series pennants since his 1973 purchase of the club), Steinbrenner, 80 years old at his death, transcended sports to become a pop culture icon.
FanHouse writes: "Not long into his ownership, a New York tabloid coined the nickname 'The Boss,' and it not only stuck, but Steinbrenner liked it."
Steinbrenner liked the characterization, and 'Seinfeld' loved it -- the mega-hit '90s sitcom featured a recurring portrayal of The Boss, with Larry David voicing the larger-than-life Yanks owner. The gag was such a hit, Steinbrenner himself made a cameo (pictured, above left). See the clip and all our favorite moments of Steinbrenner in pop culture after the jump.

Steinbrenner filmed a few commercials through the years. Here's a recent one with star shortstop Derek Jeter:
And an older ad with Yankees manager Billy Martin, poking fun at Steinbrenner's frequent firings and rehirings of Martin:
Oliver Platt also portrayed Steinbrenner in the 2007 ESPN miniseries 'The Bronx Is Burning':
He was a winner. He knew what he wanted and didn't mind paying the money for it. A Mans Man. My condolence go out to his family, friends and his team!!!!!
Some of my earliest baseball memories are of the '77 Yankees and "the coolest summer in hell". Say what you will about Big Stein, but he knew a winner when he saw one.
