Mel Gibson's Friends Turn Their Backs on Him

With more Mel Gibson tapes set to be exposed, friends who once defended the troubled 'Edge of Darkness' actor are now running for cover. "Mel is in a very dark place," one insider tells me.

"None of his friends, even those who have defended him in the past, want anything to do with him publicly or privately."

Back in 2006, when Gibson's anti-Semitic rant was exposed, several Hollywood big wigs, including 'The Patriot' producer Dean Devlin and actress Jodie Foster, stood by his side.

"Is he an anti-Semite?" Foster asked. "Absolutely not. But it's no secret that he has always fought a terrible battle with alcoholism."

It was widely believed that Gibson has been sober since the early '90s, although people close to him say he has been on and off the wagon for years. "I have been with Mel when he has fallen off, and he becomes a completely different person," producer Devlin said back in 2006.

Now those close to Mel worry it has happened once again. Mel knows his career is over with the release of this tape and is hoping he can still save his legacy. Ten to fifteen years from now, he wants to be remembered as a great actor and father, not the man of those tapes. But I fear that ship has sailed already, Mel.

TRUE FRIENDS NEVER EVER TURN THEIR BACKS ON THEIR FRIENDS NO MATTER WHAT (MAYBE MURDER). THIS SHOULD SHOW HIM HE NEVER HAD TRUE FRIENDS. ALTHOUGH WHOOPIE GOLDBERG DOESN'T SEEM TO BE TURNING HER BACK. SHE IS A BEAUTIFUL LADY. THE MEDIA SUCKS AND THEY ARE CERTAINLY NOT ONE OF HIS FANS NOR FRIENDS. LIKE THE SAYING GOES: ONLY IN HOLLYWOOD AND HERE'S ONE "ONLY IN AMERICA".

Consider this a Super Intervention. People with addictions need to be held accountable for their actions. It appears Mel is at or close to rock bottom. Maybe he will get the help he so badly needs.

What he said was offensive to many people. What I hear is someone who is ANGRY. Anger and alchol are not friends. Imagine being Mel's friends trying to get him to seek help, I'll bet he is a real jack***. I would also bet she is not the only one he has lashed out at, she just happens to be the one we know about.

True friends are also honest with you. In every relationship there's limitations of some kind.I suspect he has overstepped the boundry line even with those who love him. Even God gave us rules to live by and consequences for not doing so. I haven't heard Mel apologize for his behavior have you?

Yea, well Whoopie defended the actor/father? that called his daughter a "pig". She certainly holds a lot of respect in my opinion. When are the women of this world going to stop making excuses for men like Mel and others when they are offensive and abusive? Keep defending these guys and next time it might be your daughter/mother/sister/etc.

So true, sadly enough..there's a lot of holes in this 'woman's' story-the holes start @ is it logical he just 'went off' unprovoked..give me a break. Second 'hole' is listening to 'half' a story from any woman calculating enough to steal a married man...he fell in love for a reason...trust me, he's angry for a reason.

How interesting. So, I wonder how many of these friends (that you say should stick by him, barring murder) are black, Jewish, Hispanic, women? Should they stick by someone who was clearly just a fake person all along? A person, who probably smiled in their faces, but were really truly racist, bigoted, and sexist all along. Why should anyone be obligated to stick by a two-faced person? True friendships are a 2-way street with ALL parties being their TRUE AUTHENTIC SELVES. So, yeah.....blame everyone else except the one who brought this all on himself.

His personal is just that. His. He has no real/true friends, only W-G, the rest of his so call " friend" had no loyalty. I am so sorry about what is happening and it looks like he just olone on this. Well for my part i still love him, he is a great actor and i will see his movies old and new again

So people are supposed to stand up for Mel when he's obviously not wanting help and in total self destruct mode? Its called cutting your losses. How do we know that each and every one hasn't exhausted all efforts to get him to seek out help? How do we know he hasn't turned his back on all of them first? You don't know the whole story. All you know is they aren't standing up for him anymore. You don't know why.
I wouldn't want to stand by a woman beater. Or a raging alcoholic. You can't help someone who doesn't want it. How far are these people supposed to go for someone who keeps spiraling down and not even trying to look for help?
And stop blaming her. She might not be a saint, but no woman deserves to be exposed to or have to deal with a disgusting and vile person like that. Especially if there is a child involved. I'd like to see the proof that he did nothing. I want to see the proof that she's making it all up. I know if I were in her shoes, I'd record him and play it for anyone who will listen so they know the true colors of this horrible, inhuman SOB.

Alcoholism doesn't explain anti-semitism, anti-black, anti-gay, anti-Latino statements, nor does it explain knocking out his wife's teeth and his overall hatred towards women. I love that this guy is so religious that he built a church on his property (that was the first red flag that this guy is a nutjob). This man is a narcissistic monster and his legacy is tarnished forever. I will never see another one of this disgusting man's films.

You could not have said it better. People whining about his alcoholism being behind this latest episode does not explain this hateful and bizarre behavior. It's sad to have to say, because he IS a talented actor and filmmaker, but the thought of ever sitting in a theater again to watch one of his films simply makes my skin crawl ...
