Mel Gibson's Friends Turn Their Backs on Him

With more Mel Gibson tapes set to be exposed, friends who once defended the troubled 'Edge of Darkness' actor are now running for cover. "Mel is in a very dark place," one insider tells me.

"None of his friends, even those who have defended him in the past, want anything to do with him publicly or privately."

Back in 2006, when Gibson's anti-Semitic rant was exposed, several Hollywood big wigs, including 'The Patriot' producer Dean Devlin and actress Jodie Foster, stood by his side.

"Is he an anti-Semite?" Foster asked. "Absolutely not. But it's no secret that he has always fought a terrible battle with alcoholism."

It was widely believed that Gibson has been sober since the early '90s, although people close to him say he has been on and off the wagon for years. "I have been with Mel when he has fallen off, and he becomes a completely different person," producer Devlin said back in 2006.

Now those close to Mel worry it has happened once again. Mel knows his career is over with the release of this tape and is hoping he can still save his legacy. Ten to fifteen years from now, he wants to be remembered as a great actor and father, not the man of those tapes. But I fear that ship has sailed already, Mel.

JPX is correct. Alcoholism is NOT responsible for his bigotry. The only thing alcohol does is loosen his inhibitions and allows him to say and do the things that he otherwise controlled. Whether or not he's at or near his "bottom" is not for any of us to say. Hopefully he is, but I once worked with a woman who was addicted to cocaine. She became pregnant and desperately wanted the baby, but continued to "use". She miscarried because of the drug, and - despite the fact that she knew the drug killed her baby - that STILL wasn't her bottom! ADDICTION is the monster. It destroys the mind, and eventually destroys the body.

I don't agree! An Alcoholic has a disease and it makes you do terrible things. Just watch the show intervention and see what these people do to their families, to their friends and to themselves. Do you really believe that is who they are? My family has had plenty of addicts in it. My father was the worst kind of person when he drank but it was not who he was. He was smart, kind and funny without the alcoholic but with it he was mean, hateful and violent. People dont understand addiction so they dismiss it, believing it is something you can control. Drug addicts will sell themselves and their children for the fix, an alcoholic is no different. You obviously know nothing about addiction. It is a sad DISEASE!

He is He11 bent on self destruction....I feel sorry for the people in his life, like his children and ex wife.....this woman may not be a saint, but I believe her (cant deny the evidence) and I do feel for her.....He needs to move to a remote island, stay under the radar and wait for the end

What evidence? Have you seen the broken teeth? She "doesn't know who leaked the tapes to the press"? Obviously she taped it, so she probably chose to tape what she wanted to. What about the things she didn't tape. What she taped, was it in response to what she didn't tape? He was married to his ex wife for a long time and no problems. Doesn't it make you think? I don’t think Mel is an angel, but what about her? It seems to me that since her, that’s when all his problems started! What has she done to him for him to react this way? Something to think about.

I have always like Mel as an actor. Whatever he did is really no body business but of course that's what happens when u r famous. No one knows the whole truth about why he blew up on his girlfriend. People blow up on their loves ones everyday but of course its not all over news and stuff because we aren't famous and honestly this incident isn't going to stop me from watching his movies. He is a great actor and what he does with his life is none of my business.

I'm sorry, but i don't agree that it's not our business. Domestic violence is everyone's business because it not only hurts the ppl involved, including the children, but also others around them. I live in Alb, NM, and yesterday a gunman killed two ppl and himself in an effort to kill his ex-girlfriend in a domestic violence situation. Somebody knew what was going on and nobody said anything, now other ppl have paid the price for that.

Ashley, there is nothing that his wife could've done that would justify punching two of her teeth. He has a long history of explosive, hateful behavior. It's pathetic that you can't understand this.

I agree with you, Ashley. I love Mel's work. His personal life is none of my business or anyone elses. It doesn't affect his acting. All the Mel bashers should be glad there is no one snooping around in their private lives. Everyone makes mistakes. Unfortunately for Mel, his ex girlfriend is nasty enough to make their issues public. There are 2 sides to every story. What was she saying and doing to Mel?

WOW. H punches two of her teeth ot and admits it by saying "You deserved it", but he is a great actor so we should overlook those little faults and continue to support him at the box office?
