Orlando Bloom Earns Honorary Degree

Orlando Bloom received an honorary degree from the University of Kent on Monday and stood alongside other graduates for the ceremony at Canterbury Cathedral.

"It's a really big deal. It's an exciting day for me. I'm really honored to be back in my hometown. I have so many amazing memories of the cathedral and Canterbury," Bloom told BBC.

"I have lived near the university so it's like my playground. It's a huge, huge honor and I feel chuffed, as does my mother -- nobody more than my mother."

He was joined by fiancee Miranda Kerr, his parents and sister Samantha.

The 'Pirates of the Carribean' actor was one of 340 graduates to take part in the ceremony. This marks Bloom's first graduation ceremony -- he missed his graduation from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama because he was busy filming 'Lord of the Rings.'

Bloom, who proposed to Kerr with an estimated $65,000 ring in June, was all smiles and donned a red graduation gown as he received his honorary degree.

That was my first reaction too. Just because he play acts in a few movies he now gets a degree? A publicist with a large checkbook is an actor's best friend apparently.

As I actually EARNED my doctorate while working full-time throughout, I have a special resentment when schools just give these away. It's not fair to the students who really did earn them, and it devalues the degrees. There's nothing to be proud about, when one hasn't earned it.

honorary degree is good for actors and ... they do not need a degree,... others should choose the real one for job, advancement in knowledge. It does not matter when they pocket it. No, I did not miss my graduation in LA, I did ask them for transfer because I wanted a MBA, JD instead of Post master certificate, and a phone doctored voice did agree with me. (man or woman, MD chief justice?!! reroute?!!Xtianity)

I was wondering about that as well. I would like an honorary medical degree please... What movie do I need to act in to get that one? Oh well I'll just stay in school and study and earn it on my own.

As usual, there is hate mail, envy. It's really all about envy, isn't it? I earned my degree in medical science, but I still think it's fantastic. I notice the story doesn't tell WHY he was awarded an honorary degree, so to claim he doesn't deserve it is rather nescient.
