Whoopi Goldberg: 'Mel Gibson Is Not a Racist'

Mel Gibson's tape-recorded rants at baby mama Oksana Grigorieva are horrifying, but they're not racist, according to Whoopi Goldberg, a friend of the actor.

"I know Mel, and I know he's not a racist," Whoopi said on 'The View' on Monday, seeming both earnest and cautious to weigh in. "I have had a long friendship with Mel. You can say he's being a bonehead, but I can't sit and say that he's a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I don't like what he's done, make no mistake."

The tapes, of which RadarOnline.com has released two parts thus far, feature an enraged Gibson bellowing at the mother of his 8-month-old daughter, relentlessly employing C-words, F-bombs and, sadly and disturbingly, racial slurs including the N-word.

When Joy Behar asked if Goldberg considered Gibson anti-Semitic after his 2006 tirade against a Jewish police officer in LA , Goldberg began calling him "an ass" before stifling herself. Whoopi then pinpointed alcohol as the culprit. "Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time -- because they're drunk, they're out of control, they are not thinking, they are idiotic. I can't say anything about people like that because I know what they're like when they're drunk. This rant? I don't think he's drunk on this rant."

Whoopi concluded: "I'm not defending Mel. I'm simply saying I don't see him as [a racist] because that's not been my experience with him."

I'm an actor and two of my friends worked on Gibson's last film. They told me as they sat with him he started go off on an anti-Jewish Rant. And people , he was not drunk when he did this. And even if he was it doesn't excuse it. If you know anything about drunks all drinking does is bring out that ugly side of you that we keep hidden. Gibson had issues way before this happened. Like the rest of you I was a fan. After this and the violence toward his girl friend, no more.

Here's the real story: I know two wannabe actors who heard from friends of movie stand-ins that said that they heard that Mel went off on an anti-semitic rant. I doubt very much that Gibson would go off on an anti-semitic rant publically while making a movie even if he had those attitudes...this would be career suicide because many actors/directors/set employees are jewish and this would be openly offensive. BTW Derrick, are you jewish? Those that bear false witness...hummmmmm!

How can ANYONE care about mel now? Whoopie dont know what shes talking about, mel has her fooled still. I dont care who you are, if you are drinking or not. Mel hates everyone who is not of his own skin color. Mel hates all woman too. Mel is a drunk, plain and simple. Why would anyone say half of the things mel has said,, because he was thinking it. Then got drunk, and 'accidently' didnt think about who he was for a second.
I for one, wouldnt cross the street to see or hear him. I see him as he really is, a drunken fool, who abuses woman.

Still love Mel and everyone in the heat of the momment say alot of things in anger. I believe she continually pushes his buttons to get more money from him, it's been that way since the beginning. First mistake was when he left his wife and messed up his marriage, has been downhill since then.

Who cares if Mad Max doesn't believe there was a Jewish holocaust? I certainly couldn't care less that he said mean things and slurs of any kind at his money grubbing, attention craving Russian ex-girlfriend 'that was conveniently recording his drunken angry rants.' I find it funny America can forgive every sports figure that rapes or harms animals but if this actor says crewl non p.c. things to his ex while arguing it's front page racist, sexist boycotts. whatever you think of Woopie is your own opinion. But I have to object to the "certainty" that you have...and the media actually...that Mel actually hit that woman, broke her teeth while she was holding a baby. If that had truly happened, he would be in jail already because she wouldn't miss the opportunity to milk him for domestic violence for life! All she has is a tape that is indeed damaging to Mel. If she had any other proof, it would be in the media already! Until we see pictures of her face with the teeth out and her skin all bruised and it is confirmed through witnesses or videos that Mel did the job, I think everyone needs to just take a pause. this is not a case against an evil mel Gibson and naive, nice, and innocent Oksana. She taped him and leaked the tape to the media to get at him! That says a lot about what kind of a person she is! She is out for blood and money and if she had proofs of physical violence against Mel, we would have seen it already!
