Whoopi Goldberg Defends Herself Defending Mel Gibson
Whoopi Goldberg has come under fire for remarks she made in defense of Mel Gibson after several of his obscene, racially-charged rants leaked online.
"There has been a lot of hassle ... in the media recently about moi because I had the audacity to say that I had some personal time with Mel that goes over years and years and said that I did not think of him as a racist," Whoopi began on 'The View' today.
"If you had actually watched the show, you would have heard us say, and you would have heard me specifically say, 'I don't condone this. I don't think this is right, I don't think this is smart. But here's the piece of information that I have. My experience tells me that this is not a racist,'" she continued.
"Being a black woman, you'd think you would give me a little bit of leeway to have some feelings if I was around a racist."

"People called my office and went off on the young lady that works there. You're going to call because you think that I'm doing something wrong. And you do the same thing to this young lady that you don't even know that Mel Gibson supposedly did? Who are you?" she says, making a spitting noise. "You can kiss my behind."
On Monday,
Whoopi explained her position on Mel. "I know Mel, and I know he's not a racist. I have had a long friendship with Mel. You can say he's being a bonehead, but I can't sit and say that he's a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I don't like what he's done, make no mistake."
Goldberg also blamed his 2006 anti-Semitic tirade after being stopped by police on alcohol. "Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time -- because they're drunk, they're out of control, they are not thinking, they are idiotic. I can't say anything about people like that because I know what they're like when they're drunk.
"
But her fellow hosts weren't as keen
to forgive the actor. Joy Behar told
The Insider that Mel is not welcome on 'The View.' "Barbara [Walters] would not allow him on the show."
"Barbara's Jewish, he's an anti-Semite, he's a racist ... so he's done," Behar added.
The fourth tape of Gibson yelling at his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva recently surfaced. In it, he makes demands for oral sex before threatening to burn the house down.
In the other tapes, he screams racial slurs, admits to hitting Oksana and calls her a slut.

I don't get into any of those type of LAME shows, there are much more interesting shows to watch, rather than my time watching a bunch of SELF INDULGENT BIMBOS OR OTHER IDIOTS OF ANY SO CALLED REALITY TV SHOWS. I consider them all to be such A WASTE OF AIRTIME. Also most of the game and other contest shows have been driven into stale ground, some of which are too biased, crooked & flawed in results to be honest in their results, just a total sham. I can't tolerate watching any of them, they're too juvenile & rediculous for my taste.

Gibson`s alleged misbehavior, for years, has been clearly mentally ill. Substance abuse, people abuse, transvestitism for fun and profit. All symptoms of the same mental illness. Whoopie should not attempt to excuse it. But Joy needs to speak for herself, not Barbara.
Just have to Love Whoopie! Mel needs serious help.

I Agree....Bravo To Whoopi...I have Alway's Liked Her She Is Straight Forward and as a Black Woman She Would Definstely Know Over All Of These Years If Mel was a racist. I Like Behr and Walters, but they need to get real and stop being so religously over sensitive, what's wrong with them? Whoopi knows all of them and if the guy was racist she would say it. I don't know Mel but he just seems like a "Bone Head", not particularily racist, just acting like a brat idiot sometimes with his irresponsible outburts.
Imagine if none of us were able to stand behind our friends, simply because there insane? I have a few crumbled cookies in my pantry of family and friends, and I too know there other sides. So easy to turn ones back these days.
I like the fact that Whoopi doesn't always tow the Socialist Politically Correct road. She has broken from them before, and I like that about her.
Mel has a drinking problem that causes his mouth to operate when his brain is not engaged. If he didn't drink, he would not have these problems. Whoopi knows the sober Mel, and we don't.
I don't have much against Whoopi, and nothing against Mel Gibson, he's a great talent I like most all of his movies. To me he is more of a normal guy than most people you'd find in Hollywood, not a big fake. I also think too many people are way too thin skinned and take themselves far too serious, THEY ARE THE ONES WHO REALLY NEED PSYCHOLOGICAL HELP, AND THEY DESPERATELY NEED TO GROW UP BEFORE THEY HAVE A FREAKIN' HEART ATTACK OVER NOTHING.

I would just like to know why the famous women think they are so special that the rest of us who have gone through the same thing if not worse, do not ever even make the news or tv shows. Just because they are a president's wife or a "famous" persons partner, does this mean they are more important than the rest of us. She is lucky she is not like some people who have been murdered by their partner. Men/women cheat, Men/women abuse, just because they are "famous" does not make them less human. Are there any REAL issues we could be spending our time on?

Good for Whoopi. Someone had to say what I am feeling and she did it perfectly. Anyone can see Mel has a drinking problem and that in itself is the downfall to most.I personally wonder if those tapes are actually of Mel? Or did someone do a great job of "making" them..hey, this girlfriend is no fool and knows where the money is.
Whoopie has more to lose by stating what she believes is the truth. It would have been much easier to say nothing. I think she showed the character of a true friend and it took guts.
I just love Whoopie! I also love the People on the view. In some ways Woopie is right. She didn't condone his verbal abusive language and didn't stick up for him about the abuse. She wasjust telling people anout her own contacts with Mel. There's nothing wrong with that. I agree with Barbara and the others that Mel should never be on the view. He seems to be so hateful and resentful! I will never have anyrespect for him anymore! I used to like him so much and his movies in the past. I have refused to see the last few that were made in the last few years because of the incident with the drunk driving. I don't care if you are drunk or not, that is not an excuse!There is no such thing when you are an alcoholic! He had a choice to keep his mouth shut or sound off...he chose the wrong one. But one thing; don't hate Mel, pity him. He needs help! Everyone in life has a choice. He has to choose the right one or people will never go to see his movies or just plain hate him. Pray for him, because he sure needs it. He needs to make amends and seriously think about being a recovering alcoholic. If he chooses AA or anyother therapy and believe in the HIGHER UP, he will find himself with a blest life. You are never a cured alcoholic!!!!! You will always be a recovering alcoholic for the rest of your life! Ask me...I have been recovering for 21 years. I have not had a drink in all that time.
