Whoopi Goldberg Defends Herself Defending Mel Gibson
Whoopi Goldberg has come under fire for remarks she made in defense of Mel Gibson after several of his obscene, racially-charged rants leaked online.
"There has been a lot of hassle ... in the media recently about moi because I had the audacity to say that I had some personal time with Mel that goes over years and years and said that I did not think of him as a racist," Whoopi began on 'The View' today.
"If you had actually watched the show, you would have heard us say, and you would have heard me specifically say, 'I don't condone this. I don't think this is right, I don't think this is smart. But here's the piece of information that I have. My experience tells me that this is not a racist,'" she continued.
"Being a black woman, you'd think you would give me a little bit of leeway to have some feelings if I was around a racist."

"People called my office and went off on the young lady that works there. You're going to call because you think that I'm doing something wrong. And you do the same thing to this young lady that you don't even know that Mel Gibson supposedly did? Who are you?" she says, making a spitting noise. "You can kiss my behind."
On Monday,
Whoopi explained her position on Mel. "I know Mel, and I know he's not a racist. I have had a long friendship with Mel. You can say he's being a bonehead, but I can't sit and say that he's a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I don't like what he's done, make no mistake."
Goldberg also blamed his 2006 anti-Semitic tirade after being stopped by police on alcohol. "Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time -- because they're drunk, they're out of control, they are not thinking, they are idiotic. I can't say anything about people like that because I know what they're like when they're drunk.
"
But her fellow hosts weren't as keen
to forgive the actor. Joy Behar told
The Insider that Mel is not welcome on 'The View.' "Barbara [Walters] would not allow him on the show."
"Barbara's Jewish, he's an anti-Semite, he's a racist ... so he's done," Behar added.
The fourth tape of Gibson yelling at his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva recently surfaced. In it, he makes demands for oral sex before threatening to burn the house down.
In the other tapes, he screams racial slurs, admits to hitting Oksana and calls her a slut.

I'll be the first to admit my family is crazy. But I know them; you'll only know what someone makes them out to be in the press.
Well said. Mel is also in a relationship that is in need of help, for their child's sake. When adults have temper problems there is a need for intervention. "Liquid Courage" can make some people say and do things that are normally out of character.
Hell, I like em all...Makes life a little interesting and reminds me that me and my family and friends are not so weird after.....all of us bleed and go potty just like everybody else, and if you don't I am sure there is an app for that.

Ah Yes - I'm sure if some Southern Republican redneck had said the same thing in some rant, Whoopi would be every bit as supportive and forgiving as she is with some guy she has probably 'done; a few times. [eyeroll]

If Gibson is charged with battery, child protective services will get a referral. Where was her 12 year old son during this supposed battery? That child will be interviewed. Makes me sick to my stomach. Mel is going to have bigger problems than whether or not he is a racist. Whoppie knows him personally and I would trust her insight on that issue.
As a former alcohol de-tox worker and a bouncer I find, for the most part, people say what they believe when they have had a few drinks to fortify themselves. And when they sober up they apologize but never when they are drunk. And why does Whoopie or anyone else think Gibson deserves the benefit of the doubt after his repeated idiocy? Where there is smoke there is fire.

To all of you who say he has a drinking problem (including Oreo Goldberg), I say a drunk man speaks a sober mind. Just because he doesn't have the courage to say those things when he's sober doesn't mean that he doesn't absolutely, from the bottom of his hear, means them. He spoke those words when he was drunk because it's truly how he feels.
To Whoopi, please, please, please, embrace your blackness. You will always be black.

You know,, that was something else! Really ignorant and biased of YOU. AS for the matter at hand, "Whooppi" I think, she's on cue! As where I do not condone Mel's ignorance.. ity is his buisness and personal life! When "he" and only, HE amkes it publically known, then shame on him but people need to get a life! Truth, in fact, he made some booboo's but HE will suffer for them! Oksana is no angel, either! She's out there fishing, as well! See, This is all made for sensationalism! and we bother with this? Then, shame on Us! Just the same!!!

I don't know that Mel is a racist but what he's said about our people was wrong. However, we should not be so fast to hang people for what they say. We have all said things we are not or should not be proud of. Pay more attention to the killings by police on people that have no guns. Pay attention to the killings of the young African-Americans in the poor areas of the people. I agree with WG all the way.
A drunken mans words are a sober mans thoughts.
