Whoopi Goldberg Defends Herself Defending Mel Gibson

Whoopi Goldberg has come under fire for remarks she made in defense of Mel Gibson after several of his obscene, racially-charged rants leaked online.

"There has been a lot of hassle ... in the media recently about moi because I had the audacity to say that I had some personal time with Mel that goes over years and years and said that I did not think of him as a racist," Whoopi began on 'The View' today.

"If you had actually watched the show, you would have heard us say, and you would have heard me specifically say, 'I don't condone this. I don't think this is right, I don't think this is smart. But here's the piece of information that I have. My experience tells me that this is not a racist,'" she continued.

"Being a black woman, you'd think you would give me a little bit of leeway to have some feelings if I was around a racist." Watch the Video After the Jump!

"People called my office and went off on the young lady that works there. You're going to call because you think that I'm doing something wrong. And you do the same thing to this young lady that you don't even know that Mel Gibson supposedly did? Who are you?" she says, making a spitting noise. "You can kiss my behind."

On Monday, Whoopi explained her position on Mel. "I know Mel, and I know he's not a racist. I have had a long friendship with Mel. You can say he's being a bonehead, but I can't sit and say that he's a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I don't like what he's done, make no mistake."

Goldberg also blamed his 2006 anti-Semitic tirade after being stopped by police on alcohol. "Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time -- because they're drunk, they're out of control, they are not thinking, they are idiotic. I can't say anything about people like that because I know what they're like when they're drunk."

But her fellow hosts weren't as keen to forgive the actor. Joy Behar told The Insider that Mel is not welcome on 'The View.' "Barbara [Walters] would not allow him on the show."

"Barbara's Jewish, he's an anti-Semite, he's a racist ... so he's done," Behar added.

The fourth tape of Gibson yelling at his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva recently surfaced. In it, he makes demands for oral sex before threatening to burn the house down.

In the other tapes, he screams racial slurs, admits to hitting Oksana and calls her a slut.

The word "racist" means a different thing to different people. To a black person it means white people calling blacks derogatory names as in the "n" word, as stupid as that is. For a white person it is another white person calling a black person the "n" word, as stupid as that is or a black person calling a white person a name. Names don't kill, and unless you are open to be hurt works don't hurt people. I have observed that all persons, regardless of race, background, religion, etc., are racist about some one other than themselves at times in their lives. So we make a big deal about it when others display a racist attitude, or make a remark we feel is "racist". It's how we feel in our hearts, not necessairly what we say at a given unsuspecting moment in conversation. There are too many other problems, ie., job loss, home forcloseures, loss of economic security, direction of the country, ad infinitum.

Doesn't anyone find it strange that his girlfriend just'happened' to have a recorder going at the time? They are fighting and she takes a minute to turn on the recorder. Is this about her getting money out of him or her getting full custody of the child? If this is true, he isn't a very nice person but I don't have much respect for her either. He did have a wife and family when they got involved.

No, I don't find it strange at all. After we separated, my ex-husband told me he was going to take the house, the children, and all my money. He then proceeded to write me a series of letters that I was able to use as evidence of his abusiveness and instability. He asked me afterward why I'd betrayed him by using them. What was I was supposed to do? Just lay down and be kicked?

I don't know about CA but in MD, it is illegal to record someone without their knowledge or consent!!

Gotta give it to ya, Whoopie!! Tell it like it reallly is!! The internet is filled with posts and blogs authored by ignorant people who take advantage of the anonymity it affords. You are right...they are cowards personified; 99% of them wouldn't repeat their vile ramblings in person.

I agree with Whoppi and I do not like her but, she is right!! No doubt this man was set up so his Ex has alot of ammo on him and she will be on every talk show in the US making big bucks!! If I was Mel I would not go on the View ( B_tch session) show but, do a private interview with Mel. That will get some great rating!!!

Linda...I immediately noticed the prissy reactions at that table also, not to mention any names (JOAN BAHER). Ms. Baher was quoted stating that Gibson would never be allow on THE VIEW. When she recieved negative blogs to the tenth power for this she then stated that it was Barbara Walter's decision because she is jewish. Whoppi doesn't need to hide behind Barbara! Instead she dealt with the negative bloggers head on...and she nailed it!

I would take anything Whoopie has to say with a grain of salt. Why would a female named Caryn Johnson take the name Goldberg? Hmmm???? Maybe she's cunning enough to know that society would accept a Goldberg over a Johnson anytime. But strange enough that she's type cast as a Celie or Oda Mae Brown something more deserving for a down south country looking backwoods female that she resembles. I can see the name Whoopie because she looks like a cloud of anal gas.....That's the sound a whoopie cushion gives.

I agree with the posting that said that Whoopi naturally gives her celebrity friends the benefit of the doubt. The problem in my opinion with what she originally said on Monday, is that she "stated" ... "Mel is no racist".... when she should have said "well,in those times when I personally spent time with Mel, I NEVER sensed that he had a racist bone in his body"... but instead, she "does the Whoppie" and states her usual "my way or the highway" remark that "Mel is no racist", as if THAT is FACT! She does always seem to attempt to dilute the bad things that her celebrity friends have done...her ego is way too huge.
