Whoopi Goldberg Defends Herself Defending Mel Gibson

Whoopi Goldberg has come under fire for remarks she made in defense of Mel Gibson after several of his obscene, racially-charged rants leaked online.

"There has been a lot of hassle ... in the media recently about moi because I had the audacity to say that I had some personal time with Mel that goes over years and years and said that I did not think of him as a racist," Whoopi began on 'The View' today.

"If you had actually watched the show, you would have heard us say, and you would have heard me specifically say, 'I don't condone this. I don't think this is right, I don't think this is smart. But here's the piece of information that I have. My experience tells me that this is not a racist,'" she continued.

"Being a black woman, you'd think you would give me a little bit of leeway to have some feelings if I was around a racist." Watch the Video After the Jump!

"People called my office and went off on the young lady that works there. You're going to call because you think that I'm doing something wrong. And you do the same thing to this young lady that you don't even know that Mel Gibson supposedly did? Who are you?" she says, making a spitting noise. "You can kiss my behind."

On Monday, Whoopi explained her position on Mel. "I know Mel, and I know he's not a racist. I have had a long friendship with Mel. You can say he's being a bonehead, but I can't sit and say that he's a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I don't like what he's done, make no mistake."

Goldberg also blamed his 2006 anti-Semitic tirade after being stopped by police on alcohol. "Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time -- because they're drunk, they're out of control, they are not thinking, they are idiotic. I can't say anything about people like that because I know what they're like when they're drunk."

But her fellow hosts weren't as keen to forgive the actor. Joy Behar told The Insider that Mel is not welcome on 'The View.' "Barbara [Walters] would not allow him on the show."

"Barbara's Jewish, he's an anti-Semite, he's a racist ... so he's done," Behar added.

The fourth tape of Gibson yelling at his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva recently surfaced. In it, he makes demands for oral sex before threatening to burn the house down.

In the other tapes, he screams racial slurs, admits to hitting Oksana and calls her a slut.

1st I want to say, I do not condone any drunks actions, be they Mel or Joe Q America. Drunks are notoriously unpredictable and always have been.

2nd I want to say, everyone seems to be so up in arms over these alleged recordings/tapes, when the real one burning question is:

What woman has a recorder primed & ready to go when fighting with a spouse?

ANSWER: The lawyer advising the calculating younger woman who purposely sets out to marry, have a child & get involved with a rich older-going-through-mid-life-crisis man. One who premeditatively & systematically sets him up to make herself rich and famous. This whole situation wreaks of plotting on her part & stupidity on falling for it all on Mel's part. When are men going to think with their heads on their shoulders & not the head on viagra in their pants?

Get a grip rich older men (be you politician, actor or whatever), very very few of you were ever going to get the younger hot woman of your dreams (and keep her) without your money or ability to give her the spotlight.

People often say hateful things when they are provoked, broken hearted, or mad. We have all said things in the heat of the moment that we didn't mean. If Mel Gibson is a racist that's his business, not yours or mine. I personally do not believe that he is but I don't know him. Woopie feels that he's not a racist and she should know, they are friends. I think you should all take a long look in the mirror before casting the first stone, then you need to get a life. Stop acting like preschoolers and mind your own business.

After listening to the tapes and the tone Oksana uses, I think she played him like a fiddle. Does that excuse his behavior??? NO!! The guy has serious, serious, anger issues and should get help immediately. Thank God he didn't pull an OJ. Oksana/Nadia Sulemon/Angelina Jolie Pitt/ is a piece or work albeit one smart cookie...

I suppose you think you're justified to use this as an occasion to make hateful remarks about the President of the United States. You're really a pitiful excuse for a human being. If ANYONE talked to me that way I would tell them to take a hike. I would not listen to them or even try to reason with them. Mel is 100% WRONG- but this woman is no good either- she is calm as can be taping him more than 2 or 3 times. She is no better than him- quite frankly they probably desserve one another. One is an abuser the other a user.

I would have to agree with Whoopie...how quickly everyone jumps to conclusions without knowing all the facts...everyone is entitled to their opinion...but they should know all the facts before they conclude that someone is a racist...there are too many busy bodies...too many people quick to want to give their opinion...when it doesn't even concern them. Lives can be ruined...careers ended...lives changed forever...because while the person in question is dealing with the raging aftermath of media and public tirades...the media and those who were quick to speaking before they thought...have moved on to another story in the headlines...People just need to mind their own business...if it doesn't concern them personally!!!

Have you looked at Mel's eyes? He is a man hurting.....but he
did it to himself. He is getting older and knows he needs to
still be in the spotlight....and isn't sure how to go about that.
It's a wonder Danny Glover hasn't called him and said "what's up"? A racist - no ....a man in pain - yes.

probably a woman who knows the public will defend a nice looking man no matter what and has been on the recieving end of his verbal abuse enough to know that a recorder is a good friend...

This woman is sick, I am a African American and this man is a racist. She also Defended that director who raped a child, should anyone take this man seriously? Most people in hollywood, are allowed to be racist but not against Jewish people. Most movies have the N Word in it, I can see her on that point. It's only that he attack Jewish people that his career is over if he had said this about African American only he will be in the next big movie.
