Mel Gibson's Ex-Wife Defends Him in Court

Mel Gibson's estranged wife Robyn is finally speaking out and defending him against allegations that he hit former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

"Mel never engaged in any physical abuse of any kind toward me before, during or after our marriage," Robyn Gibson said in a declaration to a Los Angeles judge overseeing the custody battle between Gibson and Grigorieva, TMZ reports. "Mel was a wonderful and loving father."

"Robyn felt she needed to speak out to protect her children and family," a source close to her told PEOPLE. "Robyn's tried to stay out of this, but she wanted to make sure there was no speculation of what happened within her family."

Gibson began dating Grigorieva just a few weeks after his ex-wife of over 30 years filed for divorce.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department is investigating Gibson over an alleged domestic violence incident from earlier this year involving his ex-girlfriend, Grigorieva. According to a news release, police have opened an inquiry into the alleged attack, which is dated Jan. 6, and are "currently gathering information regarding the allegations."

Grigorieva's lawyers appeared in family court Thursday in Los Angeles to ask a judge to strip the 'What Women Want' actor of custody of their 8-month-old daughter, Lucia.

Detectives want to sit with Gibson's ex-wife regarding the alleged domestic violence allegations. "We want to interview him just like everyone else involved in this investigation," Whitmore told PEOPLE. "The tapes will be analyzed by our detectives. But they are not the central focus of the investigation, they're just part and parcel of it."

Gibson and his ex-wife's divorce proceedings are still ongoing. At the time of the divorce filing, they cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split. A PEOPLE source claimed that the two were separated for three years, having gone their separate ways following Gibson's 2006 DUI arrest. Gibson had stayed mostly out of the spotlight since his 2006 drunk driving arrest, during which he reportedly used anti-Semitic and sexist slurs towards the police officers arresting him.

How about she is telling the truth, when so hard to believe... I think that woman knew exactly what she was going to do when she met him, just like the other celebrity.. She had a job before Mel, why isn't she working now, instead she is claiming no money... She set him up. She had no right taping a private conversation..

They were married over 30 years. Meaning they got married in their 20s and could have been a couple for a few years before that. As they got older, the spark was gone.

I do remember around the time of his alcohol tirade, she said through a spokesperson or lawyer that the only times they ever had problems in 30 years are when alcohol was involved.

I agree with Shirl. I think that she set him up, got him drunk and pushed the limits with him and as a sneak she recorded him and also that the tapes that have been made public are doctored. The actress is out ofr money and to hurt him as he dared figure out what she really is and moved on. As far as his EX and her story...ummm I do believe that she got a lump sum settlement from her divorce to him so she had no need to lie. Granted he is a drunk and a nastyone at that but I don't buy the crap that many are spreading about him. Look to her past history, she is no peach either.

Whatever Mel did, which doesn't sound good...Oksana set Mel up big time. Recording the phone call(s) and then having the tapes doctored to make them sound they way she wanted.
Mel may of been wrong, but she's nothing but a cheap Ho trying to milk money and publicity out of these doctored tapes.

All this tells me is that Mel and Oksana were equally bad for each other. There are people you can be in a relationship with and it just works/clicks, and there are people you can be in a relationship and it's just toxic for both parties. It doesn't tell me that Mel isn't crazy or Oksana wasn't manipulative just terrbile for each other.

Nico, you probably won't like hearing this, but you are wrong! His ex-wife already had a very large settlement from Mel, like millions and property. So she is telling the truth and defending Mel. Mel has some problems now and this Russian girl is nothing more than an opportunist to get tons of money from Mel and what a shame that he was too dumb to fall for her scam. Mel isn't the first on her list. Why did she wait 6 months to release these tapes??? Because she was trying to extort more money from him.

She was with him for nearly 30 years no one knows him better than she does. This is awesome. He needs her and family now more than ever!!! He is struggling she knows his pain and whatever he is going through if it's anger issues, addiction, an evil ex girl friend trying to extort him for money, if anyone can help him through this she can. He is also a man of faith and I believe he has that to lean on as well. So to the people that keep ripping him to shredds well they have no clue what he is going through.

Gee, i guess I never saw the photos of the gun his Russian mistress held to his head forcing him to cheat on the mother of his eight kids and loyal wife. Of course I never saw the gun at his head forcing him to make anti Semitic insults to the officer that pulled him over. This guy is an angry, hate filled racist and religious fanatic who got what he deserved!

I agree with Kim. Mel is a tormented soul and we don't have a clue as to what he is going through. I do believe that his religious upbringing will certainly help him get through this very difficult time. He is after all human and prone to make mistakes as we all are. The Mel Gibson we have seen for the most part has always been a good guy-at least for me he has. If his wife and close friend Whoopi Goldberg, whom I believe knows him well stated that he is not a racist and a good guy at heart-and certainly his former wife of 30 years would know, then that is good enough for me. The movie I liked Mel in personally was "The Man Without a Face" and anyone who saw that movie can see that Mel is going through the torture that man did-yet he prevailed at the end. I'm pulling for Mel to get out of this sad chapter in his life sooner as opposed to later.

This isn't the first time he has been accused of using racial slurs. When he was arrested for DUI he used anti-Semitic and sexist slurs towards the police officers arresting him. His ex-wife is white therefore she is safe from his racial slurs. His girlfriend is Russian therefore she is not white so he has no respect for her as a woman because of her ethnicity. This man is very transparent in how he thinks of other races.
